Chapter 7

Frank would be the first to admit that his choice to go out after whoever was shooting at them probably wasn’t the smartest move. He just couldn’t stand the idea of anyone trying to hurt Seth. It was wrong.

It upset the balance of the universe or something.

Seth was supposed to always be happy, like the laughing man Frank had first met. Not the sad, scared man Frank had left hiding in the hallway. The frightened look on Seth’s pale face made Frank’s stomach clench. Seth should never be scared.

As much as Frank wanted to stay at Seth’s side, he knew he had to do something to keep the man from being scared, even if that meant running head first into the line of fire. Frank wasn’t stupid. He knew the shooter was good. The shots were too well placed, too accurate.

And they seemed to follow the direction Seth headed in. The shooter was definitely after Seth. The why no longer mattered. Stopping the idiot targeting Seth did. It was Frank’s only objective as he snuck out the back door of the house and around to the side.

He crouched down at the corner, holding his gun at the ready as he peered around the side of the house and scanned the area for sight of the gunman. He had to be out there somewhere. Frank could still hear shots being fired. He just couldn’t see any sign of them until they hit.

Flash suppressor, the gunman had to have a flash suppressor. It would be the only way there wouldn’t be some sign of the gun being fired.

As he inched around the side of the house and made his way from tree to tree, shrub to shrub, until he reached the thick woods on the side of the house, Frank had to admit that they were probably dealing with a professional.

Why a professional shooter would be after Seth was a complete mystery to Frank. Seth was too sweet, too gentle. He didn’t make enemies, he made friends. Even if he pissed someone off, they wouldn’t be able to stay mad at him for long. They certainly wouldn’t try to kill him.

Which told Frank this had to be coming from somewhere else. There was some part of this that they were all missing. And Frank was bound and determined to figure it out so that Seth would be safe in his little world.

And then maybe he’d see if Seth would allow him to be a part of that world because a life without Seth wouldn’t be any life at all. Frank almost stumbled as that realization slammed into him.

Instant family or not, he wanted Seth for the long haul. He was still scared, but he was more terrified of having a future without Seth’s beautiful smile in it than he was about accepting Seth and his daughter into his life.

Frank paused, crouching down behind a small grouping of trees, when he felt Nick tug on his shirt. He lowered his gun and turned toward his partner, an eyebrow raised in query.
