Honor is looking at another person and saying, “We may not be the same, and we may not have the same ideals, but you are a human being and I am a human being and we are in this boat together. So I am going to help you.”

The challenge is deepened when we recognize that we have a responsibility to honor all the people involved in any particular situation. It is very difficult not to choose sides!

In the case of most efforts to help the homeless, showing honor to the homeless people tends to get lost when people start to address the practical issues of how to help them. Individual personalities and personal goals often get in the way when various methods are proposed for helping.
