“So, Dev met more of my friends the other night.”

“And?”

“And he liked them, and they liked him.” I shrug.

“Was that validation you were looking for?” Raúl looks at me over the rim of his dark glasses.

“No. I don’t think I needed it to validate him or our relationship in any way. It’s just nice when your friends get along with the man you love.” Thinking for a moment, I add, “I guess it does validate feeling like a couple. His ex-friend-with-benefits was also in the audience. I think she’s still got a thing for him.”

“How does that make you feel?” His eyebrows raise with the question mark at the end of his sentence.

“Territorial. I know he’s not interested in her, but I hate how she wants to paw him.”

“How does he feel about that?”

“I think he wishes she wouldn’t do that, but I think more than anything, she’s putting on a show for me.”

“Well, you have the choice, you know, whether or not you want to grant her an audience.”

“Did the files of the recordings come through okay?” I ask Raúl, changing the subject and shifting myself into the corner of the soft leather couch as I grab a throw pillow onto my lap.

“I did get the files. Let’s take a moment and go over these.” He types on his laptop keyboard. “I’ve got five files in Group A.” He looks up at me.

“Okay, Group A contains songs that I’ve noticed he really gets lost in. None of them were written by him, but are works done by his idols, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, Art Tatum, and Lennie Tristano. There should also be five tracks in Group B, and those were all written by Dev.”

“Yes. I’ve got those, too. Does that include the song he wrote for you?”

I shake my head.

“Why not?” He’s surprised. That is evident.

Opening a compartment on the outside of my big leather hobo bag, I pull out a flash drive and toss it over to him. “That’s Group C.” Easily, he catches it. “So, I have some thoughts on this.” I don’t want to tell him how to do his job, but I’m going to tell him how to do his job. “So, my thought on this is let’s start with Group A, which is music by others that clearly takes him to another place when he is playing. And those are recordings of him playing those songs. Jesse and I both had the experience, before having full-blown regressions, where we both saw a static image or a prevalent word or thought stuck with us. I’m hoping this first group of songs can help him at least achieve that level. Once he’s doing that, then move on to Group B, his compositions. I started seeing like old-time slide shows before I moved into what were full-blown regression memories. I want him to be able to achieve that full-blown level before you play the song he wrote for me.”

“I think that’s a sound strategy. Let’s try it.
