AFTER SHE FINISHED tidying the kitchen up, Charlotte went up to her bedroom and laid awake in bed. Something about Ben felt off tonight. Had she done something wrong? Said anything wrong? Her insecurities tumbled around in her head. She replayed the events in her mind, but nothing struck her as unusual.
Not again, Charlotte. Donât go down that path again. She closed her eyes and breathed â in and then out. She focused instead on what she needed to do in the next few days. She picked up her cellphone and looked for Stephâs name in her contact list. She typed out a message and hit send.
Howâd it go at the cafe today?
Then she sent another message to Jenna.
Are you awake?
She typed out another message and reread it. She hesitated at first, but then hit send. Scott had been a good friend for years and the way Ben had treated him was uncalled for.
Hey you... howâs it going?
Jenna was the first to reply.
Yup! Just put the kids down. How are you? Whatâs up? xo
Jenna had been her best friend since they were teenagers. There was nothing she couldnât tell Jenna. She typed a response.
Iâm slightly panicking.
Her phoned beeped. About what?
Charlotte told Jenna about how she walked in on Ben in the kitchen. He had looked troubled, but feigned dizziness and went to bed early.
What if he really was feeling dizzy? Jenna replied.
I feel like there was more to it. Or maybe Iâm just overreacting.
You probably just misread it. Not everyone is like that loser, Aaron. Jenna always knew what to say.
Youâre probably right. Wanna meet up tomorrow? Going to be at the cafe. Need to finalize plans for the annual festival.
Iâll come by. Letâs have lunch. XOXO
Great! See you tomorrow! xo
Charlotte put her phone on her chest and traced her fingers around its edges. The annual festival was the biggest event in Willow Oaks. Every year, she hired a stall and also entered the Best County Pie contest.
Last year, she took the title with her Vanilla Sugar Salted Caramel Apple pie. And before that, it was her Sweet Tart Cherry Pie. This year, she was aiming to take the title away once again with a homemade Brown Butter Pecan and Banana Cream pie with Salted Caramel.
Planning for the annual festival always filled Charlotte with excitement. Why then wasnât she feeling it this time?
Her phone beeped, notifying her of a message.
Charlotte picked up her phone. It was Scott.
Whatâs up?
She looked at the screen and read his message another time. Would she be cheating on Ben by texting Scott? Was she even with Ben? They never actually talked about being exclusive. Did people still do that?
Charlotte exhaled and tossed her phone on the bed. She grabbed a pillow and put it over her face and screamed into it. Stop obsessing, Charlotte!!
