In the middle of the night, Amanda awoke in Greg’s arms. Her head was on his chest as he breathed slowly. It was warm and she was comfortable, safe, happy. So why, then, had she awoken? She laid there for a few minutes, listening and wondering as to the origins of her sudden rise out of sleep. And then she heard it. A crashing boom, like a car exploding or a bomb going off. That and nothing more.

She sat bolt upright, her breath coming in quick gasps, her body shaking. The suddenness of her movement stunned Greg into wakefulness. He sat up beside her in the dark. The sound of the waterfall kept most of the island noises from ever reaching their ears. But that one, lightning-quick blast had drowned out even the waterfall.

All was silence now, though, as Amanda sat in the dark, listening. Surely, the other shoe would drop soon. There would be another boom.

“What’s wrong, honey?” Greg asked into her ear.

The sound of his voice startled her and she jumped. “I heard a sound. A huge, loud boom sound.” She had started to tremble and he put his arms around her. She pulled them even tighter around herself.

“I don’t hear anything now. Is it possible you were dreaming?”

She shook her head violently, beginning to rise, to walk to the waterfall and look beyond it. The noise came again and she screamed this time, clinging to the wall of the cave for dear life. “Oh God!” she cried softly. “Is that?”

Pulling on his pants and zipping them quickly, he pressed Amanda back against the wall and shushed her. Then he was out the mouth of the cave, standing behind the water and peering beyond it. Lightning split the sky and immediately afterward the earth shook. Outside the waterfall, rain was falling in buckets.

“It’s a thunderstorm. That’s all. It’s okay.”

She hurried to his arms then, standing in the safe harbor of them and still trembling as she looked out over their peaceful island. Trees whipped about and leaves flew past. The sky was alight with electricity and the rain fell so hard and fast that you couldn’t see the waterfall in the middle of it. “It scared me so bad. I thought…I thought…”

“But it’s not the Japanese. Not the war.” He pulled her chin up so that her eyes met his. “It’s just a storm and we’re still safe.”

She nodded quickly and sank back into his arms, still shaking a bit. “Just a storm.”

“Come back to bed, honey. Let’s try to get some sleep and maybe it’ll be over by the time we wake up.”

She nodded though he couldn’t see her, and felt her way across the cave to their bed. He laid down first, opening his arms for her and engulfing her in them. Each time the thunder shook the island, she grasped at him more tightly, clamping her eyes shut against the lightning and trying to not hear the rain. Eventually, she fell asleep again but that sleep was fitful and wracked with nightmares.
