Chapter Eleven
If Bethany had listened to Gran earlier, she could be curled under a fleece throw on her futon watching movies. Instead, she squinted through the Rover’s windshield at the heavy curtain of snow coming down in the otherwise inky night. Gran warned her about the forecast, but Bethany decided against cancelling the trip to Duluth with Nate. She and Nate had just passed the “You are Now Leaving Twin Rivers” sign. That meant they were twenty miles from Hendricks. So far they’d been driving an hour.
Bethany cleared her throat. “At this rate we’ll be in Duluth by midnight.” She instantly regretted her words. Next to her, Nate gripped the steering wheel with both hands. He’d been pretty quiet since they left town as he concentrated on the road.
“I’m thinking we should pull off once we get to Sterling. If I remember right, there’s a motel—”
Suddenly a mighty whump! shook the car.
“Oh!” Bethany’s hand shot out to the dashboard.
“Great. Hold on,” Nate said as he turned the wheel into the slide.
The disjointed feeling of spinning out of control twisted Bethany’s stomach as the Rover made a wide, sweeping circle in reverse. The car hit a bank of snow and slid sideways at an angle for a few harried seconds. She’d never gone off the road before, but Bethany knew they were on their way to being good and stuck.
The Rover stopped abruptly. Its front end pointed nose down toward the shallow ditch. Ahead, an imposing wall of snow-draped bushes stared them down.
She and Nate looked at each other for a few frozen seconds in the glow of the dashboard lights. Then Nate let his head drop against the back of the seat.
“News flash: we won’t be going to Duluth tonight,” he said while looking at the ceiling.
“On the bright side, if my sense of direction isn’t back there on the road, I’d say we’re pretty lucky.” Bethany twisted in her seat to look behind them, but seeing anything through the rear window was impossible. “Since we just passed through Twin Rivers, there’s that stretch with the really steep drop-off on the right near the river just outside of town.”
Nate tapped the wheel forcibly with the heel of his hand. “Still.”
Bethany unbuckled herself. “What happened?”
“I think we blew a tire. And the Rover didn’t like that snowy patch with only three tires is my guess.”
Fat flakes floated in front of the headlights. The forecast called for two to four overnight. Bethany guessed four inches had already fallen, and it wasn’t letting up any time soon.
“Sit tight,” Nate said. “I’m going to see if I can see how deep we’re stuck. Not that it’ll do any good.” He found a flashlight in the center console. “Maybe I can get a look at the tires.”
Nate pushed on the door. It wouldn’t budge. He leaned into it with his shoulder, inching it open a little, but it held fast against whatever prevented it from opening on the other side. “Can you get yours open?”
