School started back on a Thursday, which always felt weird, but at least meant I had Bake Club that afternoon. Even better, Mrs Tyler was away on some training day, so I had a reprieve from counselling until the following Thursday. I was not looking forward to hearing her thoughts on the inappropriateness of Mac.

“I want you to up your game this week,” Miss Anderson said, as we all gathered round her in the food tech classroom. All, that is, except for Mac, who was nowhere to be seen. I tried to pay attention to what Miss Anderson was saying, but to be honest, most of my attention was on the door.

“The competition is just after half-term, and we’ve got a lot of work to do before then. So I hope you’ve all been practising over Christmas.” She beamed, as what she obviously thought was a fantastic idea came to her. “Why don’t we go round the class, before we start, and talk about what we baked over the Christmas holidays?”

Worst idea ever. Even more so because, just as she spoke, the door opened and Mac walked in. “And we can start with Mac,” Miss Anderson said, beaming at him.

Mac stalled in the doorway. He looked taller. Broader than I remembered. I bet he’d been working in the garage all through the holidays. I bit my lip, unable to look away. Nerves fought excitement in my chest. This was what I’d waited for, all holiday. A chance to see him, talk to him. To find out what was going to happen next between us.

“Start what with me?” he asked, shaking raindrops from his hair as he dumped his bag on the side and took off his coat.

“We’re talking about what we all baked this holiday,” Grace filled in, batting her eyelashes at him. “So? What about you?”

Mac glanced over at me and I saw a flash in his eyes before his face shut down. Anger and frustration. And somehow, his frustration with his situation had found its focus in me. Because he thought I had a charmed and perfect life and I couldn’t tell him how wrong he was.

The excitement faded away and I looked down at my hands. No wonder he hadn’t called, if that was what he remembered every time he looked at me.

“Uh, well, mince pies, I guess,” Mac said, making his way across the classroom to our workstation as he spoke. Was he talking about that day at Grace’s? That wasn’t quite the holidays, but I supposed it was close enough. Clever. “I liked making the pastry.”

“Great!” Miss Anderson turned to me. “What about you, Lottie?”

I froze. What should I say? If I lied and talked about all the imaginary delicacies I’d created, Mac would just get more annoyed. But if I was honest and told them I hadn’t touched anything more than a microwave and a toaster since school broke up, everyone else would be mad at me for not working hard enough for the club.
