Chapter 11
âMrs. Hammond, you really shouldnât be doing so much. Iâve told you, Iâm fine. Iâm not the first woman to give birth, and theyâve all had to learn how to do everything while caring for a new baby too.â
Mercy smiled at the older woman as she stood over the stove stirring a soup sheâd made for their supper. Sheâd come over the past two days to help since sheâd come home with Cora.
âIâve told you before to call me Winnie. And I know youâre not the first woman to have a baby, but other women all have had help too. You donât have a ma to take care of you, so the least I can do is come over and help you with a few meals. I might be older than the hills, but I still remember how tiring it is with a new, little one.â
Mercy laughed as she shook her head. âYouâre nowhere near as old as the hills. But youâre right. I will admit Iâm quite tired, even though Cora has been sleeping fairly well at night. I wish you could convince your son to go home, though, instead of sleeping in my barn. I feel guilty enough at him doing all of my work, without him insisting he needs to be nearby in case I need anything.â
Since theyâd come home from Faeâs the following day, Luke had been here, telling her he was staying in the barn so he would be close by. She knew he worried about the fact Jack Miller was still hanging out around town, so she did appreciate his protection.
But he couldnât stay forever and she was going to need to learn to be on her own and offer her own protection to Cora.
And, as much as it pained her to think about, sheâd been thinking a great deal about her future, and she didnât know if she could stay in Promise any longer. She had to think about Cora now, and somehow she knew even if she paid Jack for what she stole from him, he wouldnât leave her alone.
She also knew Martha Pembrooke wasnât going to back down, determined to prove Mercy was unfit to be a good mother to Cora. The woman didnât want her nephewâs child to be brought up by anyone she didnât feel was up to her familyâs standards.
Mercy was getting tired of fighting. So, maybe a new start somewhere away from where people knew her and her past was what they needed. Somewhere she could hide away and never be found. Somewhere she could be with her child and give her the life sheâd always hoped to have.
Maybe someday, she might even find someone to love her.
Without thinking, her eyes moved to the window, searching for the man she knew was out in the dust and dirt, working so hard to finish getting her crops off the field.
Even though sheâd been stubborn and determined to prove she didnât need any help, she had to admit she would never have been able to manage it without Luke.
