CHAPTER EIGHT
Bryce sat at the computer, nursing a cup of coffee and checking out world events. He had cable and often listened to the news if he was home for it, but keeping himself updated this way was more efficient. He could scan headlines and click on only the things that interested him.
His phone lit up next to the laptop, and he cringed. As soon as Andi was out of danger, he was going back to his old notification. What he had on there now sounded like Alvin and the Chipmunks trying to wake the dead.
It was serving its purpose, though. He hadnât missed a text since he set up the new alert.
He picked up the phone, and his pulse kicked up several notches. It was from Andi. You up?
He released a pent-up breath. Not a someoneâs-trying-to-kill-me text. He responded. For a while.
Have you had breakfast?
Hmm, if she wanted to cook for him, he certainly wouldnât complain. No.
On my way with Cooper.
Oh, no, not alone. He jumped up from the table and grabbed the jacket hanging on a hook beside the door. He shrugged into it as he descended the porch steps. A fine layer of frost covered the ground, and a chilly wind cut right through him.
Leaves crunched under his feet as he made his way toward the trail, the cold seeping through his socks. Maybe he should have slipped into some shoes, too. No, heâd deal with frozen feet before heâd let Andi walk over alone.
Up ahead, a door shut. He emerged from the woods in time to see Andi descend the steps, a foil-covered plate in one hand and a walking stick in the other.
Sheâd made a lot of progress with her ankle over the past four days. She still kept it wrapped and used a stick when on uneven ground, but the limp was almost gone. Sheâd said her wrist was doing fine, too, as long as she didnât bend it too far. The bruise on her leg had turned an angry blue-black. Sheâd lifted her pant leg and showed it to him, claiming she had a matching one on her shoulder and an even larger one on her hip.
As she made her way toward him, Cooper trotted along in front of her. Bryce knew the instant the dog saw him. Cooper bounded toward him, ears bouncing. Seconds later, large paws slammed into his chest.
âNo, boy. Down.â He lowered the dog to the ground, laughing. âWeâre still working on some things.â
âHeâs excited to see you. Heâll be glad when heâs not stuck babysitting me anymore.â
He took the plate she held and followed Cooper back down the trail. âActually, he does the same thing when weâre headed over here. Iâm almost afraid heâs going to choose you over me.â
âI donât think you have anything to worry about.â She paused. âWhy are you barefoot? Itâs thirty degrees out here.â
âIâm not barefoot. Iâm wearing socks.â
âWhich are probably frozen to the bottoms of your feet.â
He frowned. âYou might be right.
