TWELVE
Rachelle made it to her lobster boat and launched herself across the deck for the radio. Her camera swung out and clipped the wheel with a crack. She cringed, but it would have to wait until after she made contact with Owen, though. Help for Gage was the priority.
âOwen! Do you read?â Pain ripped from her lower lip where her teeth penetrated through the skin. âOwen!â
Her radio crackled, before a voice came over the speaker. âThis is Deputy Baker. What is your emergency?â
âBilly!â Rachelle rushed forward. âThis is Rachelle. Iâm over at Emerald Point. We found Gageâs boat hidden in the inlet. Can you tell the sheriff to come quickly? Jolene needs to be arrested. Now!â
Silence returned. Not a sound of any voice or crackling.
âBilly, did you hear me?â
âYup, I heard. Sheriff Matthews is tied up right now. In case youâre just getting on board with the situation, we have a warlord broaching our shores. Sheriff Matthews has been on the phone with the Portsmouth naval base all morning requesting surveillance for an unidentified vessel. Heâs on the phone with the feds now. This is big-time, and Gageâs boat is the least of our worries.â
âBut Jolene needs to be stopped before she hurts anyone else.â
The radio crackled for a split second before Deputy Baker said, âIâll come check it out, but only because Iâm well aware of who needs to be stopped, and Jolene isnât the only one.â
Rachelle scrunched her eyes at the radio. âWhat is that supposed to mean?â she spoke into the radio with a little edge to her voice.
âI mean the company you keep is a reflection of who you are. I shouldnât be surprised youâd go for a criminal. Like father like daughter. Are you aware of how the Getawayâs previous captain died? Did you know it wasnât an accident?â
Rachelle bit her tongue to stop her from shouting at the radio. She took a deep breath and squeezed her anger out through the button on the side of the radio. âJust get the sheriff here. Iâm not looking for a judge and jury. Iâm looking for an officer of the law. Perhaps youâre in the wrong business, Billy.â
She threw the radio down, fuming as she wore a path back and forth stem to stern. Her camera swung with each turn, and she remembered it had taken a beating against the metal wheel. She pulled the camera strap over her head to inspect the machine. All looked good. No cracks or damage on the outside. The power went on with no problem and a sense of relief spread threw her. The last pictures of the swooping hawk appeared on the screen. A majestic creature with power and grace, beauty and...pain came through. Was she looking for her mate? Did she think he left her of his own will? Redtails mated for life. This bird had to be hurting beyond understanding. If only she knew he hadnât left her, but was taken from her by malicious hands.
