ELEVEN

The car behind them remained close but never surged forward or tried to pass them. Laura had gone so long without substantial food that she was getting a headache. The lights of the truck stop glowed up ahead.

Hollis turned off and parked by the restaurant. Only one other car was there, but at least seven semitrucks were parked some distance from the restaurant at the edges of the large lot.

She assumed the car that had been behind them had sped by.

She pushed open the door. The cool night air surrounded her as she got out of her car. “I’m starving.”

Hollis joined her on the sidewalk and held the door for her. Several of the tables were occupied by men eating alone, as were two stools at the counter. The truckers, she assumed. A family sat at one of the booths—a mom and dad with two girls under the age of five.

The waitress looked up from the silverware she’d been wrapping in napkins. “Have a seat anywhere, honey. We’re not busy right now.”

Hollis stepped closer to the counter. “We’re in a bit of a hurry. Do you have a quick meal to go?”

“I could put together two fried-chicken dinners for you. Comes with mashed potatoes and green beans.”

Hollis glanced over at Laura to see if she was okay with that. Right now, she would eat just about anything. “That sounds perfect.”

“All righty then,” said the waitress. She disappeared behind the swinging doors that led to the kitchen.

Laura stepped closer to Hollis when she saw another car pull up outside. Though the car was not a police vehicle, the driver remained behind the wheel. She reached out for Hollis’s hand and then tilted her head toward where the car had just pulled in. She noticed it was parked away from the streetlamps so she couldn’t see what the driver looked like.

Hollis had been smart to get a meal to go. It wasn’t safe for them to be out in the open for too long.

The waitress returned with two to-go containers. Hollis paid for the meals, and they headed outside. When they got outside, the driver of the other car still had not gotten out. It wasn’t a car she recognized as belonging to the robbers. Not that they couldn’t have acquired another vehicle.

Hollis handed her the to-go boxes and got behind the wheel. As they pulled out of the huge parking lot and headed back toward the road, she glanced over her shoulder. The other car was no longer parked by the restaurant.

Hollis rolled onto the two-lane road and sped up. “I think we can find a turnout here fairly quickly so we can eat.”

He’d only driven for five minutes before he slowed down to park at a lookout point surrounded by trees. He parked the car so he had a view of the road in both directions, then he turned off the engine and the headlights. Someone speeding by would not notice them.

“Sorry, kind of dark,” said Hollis. He clicked on the flashlight on his phone.
