Jaycee stared out the window that overlooked the stables. She smiled at the idea of horses and country living. Even though she was certain she’d never lived on a ranch, she liked the idea of so much open space.

Yet that only reminded her of someone out there lurking to find her and kill her.

She turned away from the window.

Abby had brought her a lunch plate, which sat mostly uneaten. How could she concentrate on food after what had just happened to her? She turned away from it despite the rumbling in her stomach.

One thing she knew for certain, she felt safer here at Harmon Ranch as evidenced by the four straight hours of restful sleep she’d just awoken from.

She knocked on Brett’s door and, when he didn’t answer, she headed for the stairs to find him, hearing laughter floating up the staircase. She followed the voices and found Brett among the rest of the family seated at a round kitchen table.

Abby noticed her first and waved her into the room. “Jaycee, hi! Come on in.”

Everyone else turned, and she felt her face warm at the sudden attention.

Kenzie stood. “Dustin and I were just going upstairs to play a videogame.” She grabbed her brother’s plate then placed them both into the sink before they hurried out.

Jaycee held her own plate. She carried it to the sink then turned to Abby. “Thank you for the lunch. It was good. I guess I just wasn’t very hungry.”

Abby smiled. “I understand. You’ve been through a lot. I didn’t know what kind of food you liked to eat.”

She felt her face flush. “I don’t really know either.”

Abby gave her a sympathetic smile. “Well, who doesn’t like pot roast, am I right?” She laughed then led Jaycee toward the table.

Brett pulled out a chair for her and Jaycee sat down. “I feel like I’m interrupting a family meeting or something.”

“Not at all,” Brett assured her. “We were just catching up. Talking about old times growing up here on the ranch.”

“Sounds nice.”

All the men’s smiles seemed to fade. Brett gave a thoughtful nod. “We had our good times, but my grandfather—this was his place—he was a hard man to be around.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”

“He left each of us plus our other cousin, Tucker, a piece of the ranch when he died a few months ago. That’s why we all came back here...except for Caleb, who never left.”

“You grew up here?”

Caleb nodded. “My mother dropped me off here with my grandfather when I was twelve years old. My dad had died in a car accident and she was so busy working that she didn’t have anyone to watch me. She left me here and never came back.”

“That’s terrible. Did you all grow up here?”

Brett shook his head. “We lived here when I was younger but after my father died, my mother and I moved away. Grandpa Chet was never really a part of my life except for a few summers spent here and birthday presents he sent.
