“Good to see you,” Chief Superintendent Zablocie said. “You’re coming through nice and clear.”

Anthony felt his spine straighten. “Good to see you too, sir.”

Anthony’s boss’s face filled the screen of his laptop. Wade Zablocie had gray hair and the kind of square jaw that made his bushy 1980’s style moustache look both distinguished and intimidating. He had no concrete idea how old the chief superintendent actually was, but rumor had it he was in his early seventies. Anthony could tell by the sound of shuffling feet that there were other people in his office, including the unseen tech guy who’d set up the call. But all he could see on his screen was his boss, and over his shoulder the beautiful black and orange goldfish now swimming in elegant circles.

“When is Tessa Watson joining us?” Zablocie asked.

Anthony shot a sideways glance to the door of the bedroom suite. It was still closed. What was taking Tessa so long?

“Soon,” he said.

Anthony was about to knock on the door again when suddenly it swung open and there stood Tessa, in clean clothes, with a freshly washed face and a steely look in her eyes.

“Right. Shall we do this?” she asked.

Anthony blew out a breath in relief.

“Nice to meet you,” Zablocie said. “Thank you for joining us today.”

“You too,” Tessa said. Her chin rose. “I look forward to clearing my name.”

Zablocie nodded in response. She strode across the room toward the place where he’d set up his laptop on the coffee table, with two chairs sitting in front of the camera’s field of vision. There was some activity on the screen, and then the picture switched to what Anthony’s laptop’s camera saw—just the two chairs and the door.

“Where’s Wilson?” she asked.

“Outside on the balcony,” Anthony said and gestured.

“Has your laptop started recording?” she asked. She leaned down before the laptop, and her face filled the screen. “Can your boss and potentially people at RCMP headquarters still see us right now?”

“They can,” Anthony said.

“Does Wilson know we’re being monitored live?” she asked. “Or that we’ve started recording?”

Her eyes fixed on where Wilson was standing, outside on the balcony. Wilson waved cheerfully.

“No and no.” Anthony’s forehead creased. “He wasn’t there for any of the set-up conversation. Why?”

Before she could answer Wilson, opened the door and walked back in. He then leaned against the wall and crossed his arms. She smiled at Wilson politely.

Something was up with her. But what?

Tessa still hadn’t really looked his way, let alone met his gaze. It was like a breaker switch had been tripped inside her. Her motions were focused and determined, like a woman on a mission. But missing was the telltale quiver she got in her bottom lip or the way her fists clenched at her side when she felt like she had to defend herself. Both of which he’d have expected to see, considering she
