NINE

Knowing a homemade bomb had almost hit the ranch several days ago left Holly shaken. Sure, she, Chloe and Seth had been outside looking at the horses, but James and Julia had been in the house. And what if the blast radius had been enough to kill them all?

What a horrific thought.

Holly could not stop thanking God for their protection, for surely, He had been watching over them all.

A team had come out to collect the debris.

Mateo had expanded the patrol around the sprawling ranch, and while Holly felt guilty about the extra strain it put on the small force, she was grateful for it.

The weekend had passed by uneventfully. Probably because they’d hunkered down, taking refuge at Big Sky Ranch.

Now Mateo was here with more information to share.

Holly clenched her hands into fists and placed them on her lap so she wouldn’t nervously tap her fingers on the kitchen table.

“I’m going to get right to it.” Holly appreciated Mateo’s directness. “There was a pipe bomb attached to the drone, as Seth suspected.”

Seth nodded.

“There was a timer, so I’d say whoever set it estimated how long it would take to fly it to the house. Maybe it was to land on the roof or fly through a window,” Mateo continued. “There’s no telling what the exact plan was, but the intent is clear.”

Yes, it sure was. The intent was to kill them all.

Holly shuddered.

“What about the car? Any leads on it?”

“Not yet, Seth, unfortunately. Not a lot of people use surveillance cameras around here. The town itself doesn’t use CCTV, though I’ve pushed for it,” Mateo admitted. “The interesting thing, and I say that with a fair amount of sarcasm, is that the license plate number you gave me belongs on an old Ford Pinto.”

“That car was not a Pinto. They don’t even make those anymore.” Seth frowned. “I would’ve paid closer attention to the make and model if I hadn’t been so sure the license plate would give us the information we needed.”

“One of my men contacted the owner, went right to his house. The car belongs to a young guy, and he was surprised to see the plates had been swiped right off his car. He hadn’t even noticed. Whoever tried to bomb this place was thinking ahead. They knew you’d see the license plate and didn’t care because it wouldn’t matter.”

Seth scrubbed a hand through his hair.

Another dead end.

He looked as frustrated as Holly felt.

“I do actually have some good news,” Mateo continued. “I received confirmation that we have a match on the prints lifted from the envelope.”

“Who is it?” Holly leaned forward.

“They belong to a woman from Mulberry Creek. Teresa Krause. Sound familiar?”

Holly’s brow furrowed in thought. “No.”

“What do you know about her?” Seth asked Mateo.

“She’s a fifty-eight-year-old widow. Her son, Todd, lives in Bozeman. We haven’t been able to get in touch with him yet but we only found out an hour ago.”

“Todd... Todd Krause?” Holly pieced together the information.

“Correct,” Mateo confirmed. “Do you know him?”

“His name is familiar.
