Sawyer hated that things had come to this. Men invading his home. His safe place.
Muffled gunshots resounded through the home. Suppressors. They were using suppressors.
Sawyer dived behind the sofa and tried to wrap his mind around this insane scenario.
Everly hid behind the plush chair that now had holes in it. She signaled that she was okay, then disappeared from his line of sight.
His gun ready, he remained stock-still and quiet.
When a pair of boots came into view beneath the sofa, Sawyer knew he would soon be discovered. Time to go on the offensive. Sawyer tackled the man to the ground. He received a knee to his gut. An elbow to his side.
And he delivered as good as he got.
Pain ignited at the side of his head. He crumpled to the floor and tried to scramble to his feet. But the intruder was on top of him and trying to force his gun at Sawyerâs face. Sawyer held him off, working to push it away.
âWho. Are. You?â He ground out the words, grunting with the effort to stay alive.
Anger coursed through him.
âWhat. Do. You. Want?â
He got no answer. He growled and squeezed the manâs wrist as he twisted his face away from a direct shot. Fear for Everly, for Layla, rocked through him.
I have to live. Layla needs me. Iâm all she has!
He knocked the gun out of the manâs hand, then landed punches to his gut and nose. He tore the manâs mask off, but it was too dark to get a good look. Sawyer rolled the man over just as a bullet whizzed by his head, and he once again dived behind the sofa. He couldnât return fire because he might hit Everly.
But he spotted her obvious silhouette when lightning flashed and briefly brightened the room.
She stood with a wide stance, aiming her gun, then shot at one of the men.
He tumbled out the shattered window. Sawyer crawled out from behind the sofa, trying to ignore the pain as he stumbled back and attempted to right himself. The man heâd taken down was gone.
âTheyâre getting away!â Everly shouted.
Eyes burning, nose bleeding, Sawyer shook off the daze. âStay here and protect Layla. Iâm going after them.â
He dashed out the door and into the raging wind and lashing rain. Sawyer spotted the figures racing toward the cover of the trees. Adrenaline coursing through his body, the pain from the fistfight faded, and he flew across the wide expanse of his five acres and toward the woods. He had to catch those men.
Wind drove the rain into his face, and it stabbed like daggers.
I must protect my family.
They melted into the woods, and darkness closed in on him, but he pushed toward those trees.
Sawyer brandished his gun again. He needed to defend himselfâonce he found them, that is.
And he needed to catch these guys.
Or at least one of them.
He sloshed through deep puddles across the acreages until he made it into the shadow of the trees. There, he paused against a thick-trunked cedar and caught his breath.
