Wonderful. Charlotte’s life was in danger, and she had no idea where the threat came from.

A lump clogged her throat. Falling apart in front of these people didn’t sit well with her. They all exuded strength and courage, and here she was on the verge of becoming a blubbering mess. She excused herself and rushed to the kitchen before the tears fell.

Fingers gripping the edge of the sink, Charlotte hung her head and struggled to catch her breath. Hadn’t she lived through enough pain in her life with her mother’s abandonment and her father kicking her out when she got pregnant? Not to mention, the father of her baby had wanted nothing to do with her as soon as he’d found out about the pregnancy. Then to top it all off, her baby died while she lay in the hospital alone. God, where were You when I needed You most?

“What can I do to help?” The deep baritone of Dennis’s voice signaled he stood a few feet away.

Why did he have to be so nice? She shook her head when her voice refused to function.

A paper napkin appeared in front of her. “Here.”

“Thank you,” she whispered.

“Want to tell me what’s going on?”

She shrugged. Not ready to share, she went with the obvious. “Being a target for a killer is messing with my mind. I keep coming back to why.”

“I think the group is correct. The attacker thinks you can identify him. Either from the medallion or simply because you found Stella.”

Charlotte straightened and shifted her gaze to him. His gray eyes held so much compassion that her legs almost failed her.

“After seeing the medallion, has anything clicked?”

“No. Nothing more than a familiarity that I can’t explain.” Charlotte rubbed her temples. “What if it’s the answer to Hannah’s location?”

“We’ll find her.” He brushed his hand down her arm, sending butterflies loose in her stomach. “I just want you to keep thinking about where you’ve seen that medallion.”

“I promise—” Her cell phone buzzed, and she glanced at the caller ID. “I need to take this.”

Dennis nodded and headed back to the living room to give her privacy.

Charlotte answered. “Hi, Ginny.”

“Miss B.” Ginny sniffed. “I’m scared.”

“Talk to me, honey.” Charlotte’s mind ran wild with horrible scenarios.

“I’m at the hospital. I don’t want to have this baby by myself.”

Charlotte’s hand tightened on her phone. “You’re in labor?”

“Yes,” the girl cried.

“I’m on my way, Ginny. Hang in there.” The timing couldn’t be worse with everything going on, but babies didn’t ask for permission. They came when they were ready, and Charlotte had vowed not to let her girls go through the experience alone.

“Thank you, Miss B.”

The call disconnected.

She shoved the phone into her pocket and rushed to the living room. “I have to get to the hospital.” Seven sets of eyes landed on her.

“What’s going on?” Dennis’s demeanor switched from easygoing to all cop.

“Ginny’s in labor and wants me there. I don’t want to leave her alone like I... Never mind.” She shook her head.
