The tip of the blade pressed into Chelsey’s tender flesh, sending a stinging sensation and a wave of fear through her bloodstream. Anyone who claimed agents felt no fear were liars. Wally was irrational, frenzied and therefore dangerous and reckless. She couldn’t anticipate his next move.

A flash of panic in Tack’s eyes told the same tale, but there was something else that had him slack-jawed and ashen. Some other fear.

Suddenly, his blue eyes cleared.

“We just want to talk about Izzy Garcia.”

“I didn’t kill her!” he yelled, his hot breath brushing her cheek. She winced as his grip tightened.

“I believe you,” she said with a calmness she did not feel. “No one thinks you killed her, but we think you might know who did. And it’s clear you know something sinister, or you wouldn’t have run from us and taken me hostage now. Right?”

His grip loosened. This man needed calm and composure. A woman would be less likely to threaten him. She’d already noticed his protruding forearm veins and unusually large biceps. He juiced. Alpha male. Chip on his shoulder and impulsive. Men were nothing more than rivalry to him. Tack’s stature alone would feel intimidating to him even if Tack’s arms weren’t the size of boulders.

Chelsey caught Tack’s eye and spoke through hers to tell him to back off, to let her lead the way out of this. It was the best chance they had. He needed to trust her. His nod was almost invisible, but he didn’t drop his weapon.

Chelsey continued, “Wally, I know you don’t want to hurt me. Just like you didn’t hurt Izzy. What happened to her? Do you know who killed her?”

“It wasn’t me. I—I loved her.”

“And the man called the Outlaw killed her.” She needed to remind him who the real enemy was. “He tried to kill me, too.”

His grip loosened a fraction more, and she breathed easier.

“We want to find him, but we have nothing but your work pin. How did you meet her? And why did you run?”

Tack kept his eyes on Wally and his gun still aimed at him with a steady hand. Not a single shake. That was Tack. Her constant. Her steady.

“I...”

“Put the knife down. Let me go. You’re hurting me, Wally.” Her heart thundered against her ribs. His slight release did nothing to soothe her. He could make a split-second decision any moment, act on impulse and haul her outside like a hostage or slit her throat and take his chances on an escape.

Tack’s gun slowly raised, and it dawned he was preparing to take a head shot if it got out of control. It wasn’t. Couldn’t. “Wally. Help me help Izzy. Let’s figure out who killed her.”

The seconds stretched like eternity ticking by. Beads of sweat lined Tack’s forehead, but his gaze was resolute. Chelsey’s stomach knotted and roiled. Blood whooshed in her ears. The cashier was still crying into the carpet.

Wally slowly released the knife and dropped it. Chelsey kicked it away and grabbed
