ELEVEN

Marti shoved off the EMTs’ concern about her well-being when they arrived at the cabin. She directed them to Pete and insisted they treat him first. “He’s the one who needs your help.”

Terry O’Reilly had been questioning Pete and backed off when the EMTs moved in.

“Did you get a good look at the guy in the workshop?” Terry asked as he approached Marti.

“He appeared to be the same person who was at Valerie Nichols’s house the night I arrived. About five-ten, stocky build, bushy beard and wearing a red jacket.”

“Can you be certain?” he pressed.

“Actually, no. He left the shop as I entered, and it took Luke and me a bit of time to get Pete outside before I followed after Hank. Or whatever his name is.”

“But he surprised you, right?”

“He came up behind me.” She gingerly touched the lump on her forehead.

“Looks like you’ll have a bad bruise,” Terry said.

Luke nodded in agreement. “I want the EMTs to check for a concussion once they finish with Pete.”

“I didn’t pass out, and I’m not showing any signs of nausea or vertigo,” Marti insisted.

“Actually, you did pass out in the forest.”

“Only momentarily,” she admitted.

“It was longer than that, Marti, and you can’t talk your way out of this. You need to be examined.”

Terry stepped closer. “We found a sleeping bag in the back corner of the workshop and some discarded fast-food wrappers. I have a hunch the guy was living in the shop while Pete was traveling.”

“Now we know where Hank has been holed up.”

Terry nodded. “Pete arrived home late last night and found the guy this morning. When Pete demanded he leave, the guy went ballistic.”

“We need to find Valerie,” Marti said. “She’s got to know something about Hank.”

“I’ll have one of my deputies stop by her house in case the pool guy decides to pay her a visit.”

“His truck should be easy to spot,” Luke said.

“‘Should be’ is correct, but we haven’t found him yet. You guys from Atlanta PD have any ideas?”

Marti and Luke both shook their heads. “He’s found a back way down the mountain and into town is my guess,” Luke said.

“But no telling where he is right now,” Marti added.

“The guy’s becoming more aggressive,” the sheriff admitted. “From the looks of the empty chemical bags near the sink in the workshop, he mixed the various ingredients knowing they would be volatile.”

Terry glanced at Marti. “He probably planned for a big explosion and fire, but you barged in on him. If so, your arrival could have saved Pete’s life.”

She looked at Luke. If he hadn’t chased after her, she might have died, as well.

“Looks like two lives may have been saved today,” the sheriff said as if reading her thoughts.

One of the EMTs approached Marti. “Ma’am, we’ve got Mr. Givens ready to transport to the clinic. I want to check your condition before we let you go.”

Marti stood up and felt the world shift. Maybe Luke and the medic were right. She needed to be checked before she tried to drive back to town.
