More than an hour later, Rose said they were close to the ranch she was taking care of for vacationing owners. During the course of their hike, they talked on and off, drifting into companionable silence, then starting up a new subject. It almost seemed like they were good friends on a recreational adventure, which felt strange, but unusually grounding.

A feeling that seemed to normally elude Noah. Not good. He was developing a connection to this woman, maybe even a dependence that could only bring disaster to both their lives. He knew what he was: a damaged man who’d crossed the line into darkness too many times to ever justify redemption. No, not even Rose’s God could forgive Noah. He knew this in his heart.

Yet she’d called him a good man.

Good? Noah would never classify himself as good. Not after everything he’d done. But he didn’t argue with Rose to avoid conflict between them.

Another red flag—he wanted her to be happy, to make her smile, maybe even laugh.

What was happening to him?

“Down there, see?” She pointed.

In the distance was a two-story house with a wraparound porch, a barn on the property and a pen for horses.

“They have livestock?”

“Yes. They’re paying a local wrangler to care for the horses, pick stalls and feed them. Take them out in the pen for exercise.”

“But no one’s in the house?”

“No, that’s my job. Make sure it looks lived in.”

“Are you staying there?”

“Some nights there, some nights at my apartment, some nights at Mom and Dad’s house. It’s good for Oscar to learn how to be comfortable in different environments.”

“He seems like he can be comfortable anywhere.”

“Wasn’t always that way. He can be a bit...neurotic, I guess.”

They approached the back end of the trail that led to the property and she put up her hand. “I’ll check it out first, to be sure.”

“I’m protecting you, remember?”

She nodded. “Let’s go.”

The setting sun cast a burnt orange glow across the sky. She hurried toward the house as if she were on a mission and wasn’t about to be deterred. He hoped they were alone, that the wrangler wasn’t on the premises.

They made it to the back porch. “I have keys for the front. Wait here,” she said.

She went to the front of the house and he waited for what seemed like forever. As he scanned the surrounding forest, he found himself grateful for his safety, and Rose’s.

As the minutes passed, he grew worried and edged his way around the porch to the front.

“Thanks for letting me know, Adam,” she said. “I’ll call Mr. Brewer and give him the scoop when I check in with him tonight.”

“No problem. I’ll be out here tomorrow morning to exercise the horses. If Spirit is still punk, I’ll call the vet.”

“Sounds good. Oh, and could you do me a favor?”

“Sure.”

“Don’t tell anyone you saw me here tonight.”

“Everything okay?”

“Yes, thanks for asking.”

“But no car, no dog?”

“I was on a nature walk and decided to come the back way. My brother is picking me up later.
