They followed the curve in the river, bees humming in their ears, butterflies hovering over the bluebonnets. The world seemed so far away out here. Marco wished this could be a normal day with a beautiful woman, but this was anything but normal.

He couldn’t relax. He couldn’t fall for her.

“Marco?”

Shaking off his regrets, Marco glanced to where she pointed. “I think that’s it.” She squinted into the sun. “Daniel and I used to walk beyond this cave to another path. But I don’t even see the entrance to that one anymore. If someone wanted a quicker way to get onto the Triple R, this spot would be it.”

They trotted along in the shallows, the water slashing up behind them. He studied the rock formation that split the streambed in half.

“It’s like a natural tunnel,” he said, taking in what looked to be about an eight-foot rock formation hunching over the water before it dropped beyond the stream. “Are you telling me this rock wall goes down on one side?”

“If I remember correctly,” she said. “I didn’t linger in there last time.”

“And you were with him?”

Daniel.

She nodded, her gaze holding steady. “I can’t lie about it. Yes. I was with him a lot in these hills, Marco. But he’s not here now.”

“Oh, he’s still here, all around. He’s not alive, but he’s here. I can see it in your eyes.”

“And that makes you angry?”

“No. I have no hold over any of this, or over you. I get it—you loved him, and he died. That’s cruel and unfair. And now someone’s using your love for Daniel to taunt you and play tricks with your mind.”

“So what are you saying?”

Marco let out a sigh while he studied the rocks, thinking this big one that split the river was kind of like the wall between her and him. She’d already been way out of his league the night he met her. Now, she owned all of this, and she still longed for another man to rule this kingdom with her.

“I’m saying let’s get this done. Find these people and end that suffering at least.”

“You mean, me thinking I see Daniel and when I don’t see him, still thinking about him?”

“Yes, Amelia. But mostly, I want you to feel safe and stay alive. The rest will be figured out after I’ve accomplished that goal.”

Her eyes held hurt and confusion while she set her expression to a stony neutral. “Then let’s get into that cave before the sun goes down.”

He followed her around the big rock, wondering why he’d been so blunt in his feelings. Maybe because he’d never had such feelings before.

Focus. He asked God to give him a focused mind and the ability to make wise decisions.

Amelia pointed to a low-hanging tree limb. “This hasn’t changed that much. The tree’s bigger and the limb is hiding the cave even more.”

They tied off the horses, then Marco pulled out a small, high-powered flashlight. “Are you sure there’s a cave in there?”

“Yes,” she replied in a clipped voice, her frustration and anger palpable.
