CHAPTER EIGHT

“Why can’t you leave him here? I said I’d go willingly,” Brianna protested.

“We’re not going to hurt you or your friend, but we need leverage, and we know you’ll cooperate if we’ve got him.”

That’s when she realized the man restraining her was Eric from the mountains yesterday.

“A little help here?” Eric’s partner said, trying to drag Jacob away.

“Let me get her into the car first.” With a firm grip on Brie’s arm, he led her behind the cabin to a black Suburban.

“Why are you doing this?” she said.

“My boss needs to talk to you.”

“Who’s your boss?”

“Save the questions.” He opened the passenger door and motioned her inside the SUV. “Keep quiet. If you do anything stupid like honk the horn, your friend will suffer more than a hangover from the sedative.”

He slammed the door.

She fisted her hands and released one of her muffled screams, the kind she’d perfected as a teen so no one would hear her, judge her and use her frustration against her.

“You’re smart. Figure your way out of this,” she said.

She didn’t want to put Jacob in more danger, nor did she want to put the Rogers family or their guests at risk.

Knowledge was power, and she needed more of it.

She dug through the front seat’s back pocket, looking for something to give her a clue about her captors, but she came up empty. If this was a rental, there wouldn’t be much in the back seat. She leaned forward and spotted a notepad with words scribbled across the top: Det. Harper—Dr. Wilkes at Boulder Creek Ranch.

Wait, what? Detective Harper was involved in this?

The door opened, and the men awkwardly shoved Jacob into the back, his head flopping against the headrest.

Eric looked across Jacob at Brie and said, “To be clear, we’re going to leave the property without incident. If you do anything to prevent that, well—” he gently slapped Jacob’s cheek “—your cowboy will suffer the consequences.”
