Holding the firearm close to his body, Quentin eased down the hallway with his back to the wall.
The back door swung open toward the outside. At the last second Quentin slipped into a bedroom. He heard footsteps plodding methodically up the hallway toward him. He positioned himself so he would have a view of the man from the back as he passed by the door.
Quentin could hear his own heartbeat drumming in his ears as the footsteps drew closer. Then he saw the man from the back, bald spot, gray hair.
âDad?â
The older man spun around, eyes wide when he saw the gun. âThatâs a nice how do you do, son. When did you get into town?â
Quentin put his gun away. There were bruises on Larry Deckerâs face. âDad, what happened?â
âYouâre gone for five years with only the briefest of phone calls to let me know youâre alive, and that is how you greet me? I could use a hug, son.â
Quentin embraced his dad. âWhat happened? Where were you?â
âSome yahoo jumped me when I got out of my truck just on the other side of the barn and stole my rifle and took my keys. Knocked me out and tied me up.â Larry stepped back and massaged his wrists where the ropes must have been. ââCourse I got away. I heard shots being fired. I came back here to call the police.â
Their conversation was shattered by the cacophony of glass breaking in the living room.
âGet down. There is a man outside shooting at us with your rifle.â
Both men dropped the floor.
Larry shook his head. âI got to hand it to you, son. You do know how to make an entrance after being gone so long.â
âWillow is here with me. We need to get her and escape out the back,â Quentin said. âYou donât move and stay low.â There were no windows in the hallway so his dad would be safe. âIâll come back for you.â
âSon, you got a lot of explaining to do, but later.â He patted Quentin on the back.
Quentin called from the hallway into the living room, using the back of the couch as cover. âWillow, where are you?â
She poked her head around a lower cupboard. âHeâs getting closer.â
Another shot whizzed through the window, breaking more glass. Quentin lifted his head just above the top of the couch. Through the broken window he could see a man running with a rifle and then dropping to the ground behind some hay bales. âI found my dad. Come on, weâll go out the back door and circle around.â
Willow crawled on the floor until she met up with him behind the couch. They both made their way down the hallway where they could stand. His father wasnât there anymore. Panic set in. âDad?â
The old man emerged from a bedroom holding a vintage revolver. âItâs not my first rodeo, son. Looked like we could use some fire power.â He handed Quentin the holster that would fit his gun.
Quentin took it and shook his head.
