NINE

Lucy’s spine rubbed against a concrete wall. A blindfold covered her eyes and the top part of her nose, and her wrists were bound behind her back. The overpowering scent of body odor and mold stung her nose, and the drip-drip of water scalded her ears. Cold concrete sent tremors over her arms and legs. Boone’s small body pressed into hers, the only light in the darkness.

“I’m scared.”

“It’s okay. I’m here with you.” She swallowed gingerly, her throat raw from screaming at the fire tower. “God is, too. He won’t leave us.”

It felt strange saying that out loud since she’d been denying that very truth for her entire adult life. But for some reason, in that cold, echoey room, she was certain it was the truth.

“Can God get us away from this bad place?”

“I think so. Let’s pray that He does.” She rested her chin on the top of his head. “Please, God, we need Your help. Show us a way out of here. Keep us safe. Amen.”

“Amen.”

Her mind went straight to Noah. Was he alive? Tears formed, but instead of falling down her cheeks, they soaked into the blindfold.

“I’m sorry I went to the top part.”

“It’s okay, Boone. It’s hard to wait sometimes.”

“Why do you have a shirt on your eyes?”

Lucy straightened. “You don’t have a blindfold on your face?”

“Kinda. Mine fell on my chin.” He spit like there was disgusting food in his mouth.

She angled her face to try and see from under the foul-smelling piece of cloth.

“Can you see where we are?” Relying on his five-year-old eyes and understanding would be difficult, but at least they could try.

“I dunno this place. It’s big and dark and there’s no couch.”

No couch. Of course not, because it felt like a factory or facility. She replayed the last few hours. The men had dragged them down the mountain and put them into a large vehicle. From what she’d seen before they blindfolded her, it appeared to be a white cargo van. She’d listened intently to their conversation. Shadow Back Mountain was the only location name she could remember.

They’d driven for several minutes over winding, paved roads. No other traffic had passed by. She’d listened intently for that. Which meant they must still be in the forest.

Something solid but small fell in her lap. Little fingers tickled her legs. Boone’s hands? “Your hands are tied in front of you?” This could definitely work in their favor.

Footsteps snapped her attention to the far end of the room. It took the person nearly ten seconds to reach them, which meant it was a large room.

“Quit talking.”

Recognition stunned her. That voice belonged to the burly man who’d attacked them near the waterfall. She was sure of it. And he’d been there at the fire tower, near the bottom. So far it was the burly short man and the thin blond man who’d grabbed them atop the fire tower.

She gulped down a sob. Was Noah okay?

“Where are we?” she demanded.

“Look, lady, you aren’t asking questions. I am.
