Kinsley wished she hadnât said those words. Sheâd only been teasing. She certainly wouldnât have to be desperate to snuggle with Brett under any circumstances. Still, she felt a little awkward.
But she was cold, and they needed to stay warm. They both gathered needles and leaves, and for good measure, Brett positioned a log so theyâd have something to lean against.
âWould you prefer I leave the log out and we can just lie here instead?â
âThe log is good for now and we can watch the fire for a while.â
âI have a feeling weâre both going to fall asleep from sheer exhaustion.â
âYou might be right.â
âAnd once I sit down, I donât think Iâm going to get back up soon.â He quirked a grin, but she saw the exhaustion on his face and in the set of his shoulders.
âLetâs leave the log.â It was better to ease into this situation. Lying down together felt too intimate. She crawled into the lean-to and sat on the soft ground, then leaned against the log. He followed her in and wrapped his arm around her for warmth. She snuggled against him and stared at the fire. Back when they were a couple, theyâd never actually been camping. She hadnât known heâd enjoyed hiking, even. Was that something new or had he always been more of an outdoorsman? She thought sheâd known himâsheâd loved himâbut then again even when someone knew someone well, it could take a lifetime to learn everything. And sheâd wanted that lifetime with him.
Back then.
She shouldnât think about what theyâd had together before because that did her no good nowâbut being here made it difficult not to wonder. He remained tender and caring and all-around good in every way and it baffled her that he wasnât already married. Didnât have a girlfriend.
Wait a minute. Maybe he did at least have a significant other, but sheâd failed to ask and heâd failed to tell her. For that matter, maybe she hadnât asked because she was afraid of the answer, which seemed crazy. But no way would she ask him now, while she was curled up in his arms. Besides, he wouldnât have been staying on the beach alone if he was married.
Okay. Good. She could stop worrying. Smiling to herself, she relaxed into him. Warmth infused her. She could let herself fall asleep just like this. Unfortunately, that meant she might be getting entirely too comfortable against him.
Being with him felt far too good, and right.
This is completely surreal.
She couldnât have imagined this moment in her wildest dreams. At least they werenât snuggling out of affection for each other. Instead they were just trying to survive. How could her life have come to this moment where she was cuddling with the man she used to loveâa man whoâd broken her heartâin order to live through the night and not freeze to death?â
A log fell and startled her from her sleepy thoughts. âThe fireâs going out. Will we be okay?â
âIâll need to stoke it, but I wonât add more firewood.
