Finally dressed in her own clothes from the backpack Linc had delivered, Ivy slid into a chair at the huge plank-wood dining-room table and dropped the Mendez estate file next to the laptop Angie had loaned her.

She planted both hands on the thick file, resting her palms on the card stock as she closed her eyes. Lord, we need answers. We need to know who killed Clarissa, who’s chasing me, who threatened Wren. Please. She let the stillness around her settle onto her skin, resting in the sense of God’s presence and in the warmth that she remembered from so many family meals shared in this room.

Ivy let herself relax into a sense of safety. At this moment, in this room, no one was aiming a gun at her or even drawing back to toss a Molotov cocktail through the window.

Jacob had passed her the backpack and suggested she change, then he’d jogged up the stairs to get into dry clothes after his search outside.

When the rain stopped, Angie had loaded Wren into the pickup to go back to the cabin, where Wren had left her stuffed bunny. They planned to ride over to the conservation land to look at the cattle there so that Ivy would have time to read through the file without interruption.

At Ivy’s request, Linc had gone with them. They might be safe on the ranch, but she felt a lot better with an armed federal agent along for the ride. However, she hadn’t missed the awkward greeting between Jacob’s sister and his closest friend. Something hovered between them. In a different time, she’d have dragged Angie aside and told her to spill it.

But that really was a different time. Before an assassin had targeted her.

Before she’d hidden Wren from her father.

Ivy’s chin sank to her chest. It didn’t matter that her old feelings for Jacob weren’t old and never had been. Everything revolved around Wren and what she needed.

Could she wrestle down her fear and build the life she’d never truly stopped dreaming about with Jacob?

Would he even want to try after she’d betrayed him so arrogantly?

She balled her hands into fists on top of the folder. And, Lord, please. This thing with Jacob and Wren is a tangled mess. My heart is a tangled mess. I want—

“You ready?” Jacob’s deep voice fell over her prayer like a warm blanket.

Like the voice she wanted to hear for the rest of her life.

The thought jolted her, and her head jerked up, her hands falling into her lap.

“Sorry. Didn’t mean to scare you.” Jacob pulled out the chair beside hers and sat, clueless that his sudden appearance hadn’t been what startled her. Just his presence had shot that lightning bolt through her.

And it had put the brakes on a request she wasn’t certain she should be praying.

“It’s okay.” Ivy breathed deeply and exhaled slowly, trying to ignore that Jacob’s knee brushed hers under the table and that she could feel the warmth of him from where he sat.
