EIGHT

“I knew that was you two I saw on the road,” Vincent said as he closed the limited space between them without lowering his weapon. Before Faith had time to react, Vincent snatched the gun from her hand and then pointed his at her head. “Toss that weapon over to me now,” he told Eli. “Before I shoot her right where she’s standing.”

“Don’t do it, Eli,” Faith warned. If Eli gave up his weapon, they’d be completely defenseless, and she was positive Vincent planned to kill them.

Vincent fired a shot above her head. “Next one won’t miss.”

Eli slowly tossed the gun at Vincent’s feet. Faith edged closer to him and reached for his hand. He made her feel safe, and she believed after everything they’d been through—the things that happened in New York—Gott wouldn’t let them die like this.

While keeping a close eye on them, Vincent picked up both weapons and hurled them into the underbrush.

With the gun still trained on them, Vincent moved closer. A triumphant grin played across his face. “This could have been avoided if you’d kept what Blake told you to yourself. Instead, you had to blab it to Cheryl. Now this guy and that old woman. Look what’s happened because you couldn’t keep your mouth shut.” He waved the gun in her face and winced. Vincent appeared to be favoring his injured shoulder. Their only chance at getting through this would be finding a way to disarm Vincent.

“Let’s go!” he barked and they jumped. “You’re both coming with me.”

Vincent pointed toward the road. “Get going!” His expression twisted into rage when they hesitated. He shoved Eli’s injured arm, and Eli bit back his reaction to the pain. “Go.” Faith started toward Eli, but Vincent grabbed her by the arm and hauled her along with him toward the truck.

If they got into that vehicle with Vincent, they’d be dead. He’d probably take them somewhere off the community and shoot them. Maybe into the mountains where he’d leave their bodies for the animals to dispose of. Faith couldn’t let that happen. Eli was right. She had to tell Cheryl’s story. To do so, she had to survive.

Vincent dragged her along beside him, then crossed the road and headed for the truck.

The closer they came to their fate, the more frantic she became. “I made copies of all the evidence Blake gathered. If I go missing, it’ll be sent to someone with enough authority to bring down you and the rest of your dirty cop friends along with Ghost.”

Vincent jerked her to face him. “You’re bluffing. You have nothing. And my wife’s body is still in your house. You fled the scene of a murder.”

His eyes narrowed as he watched her. “That really doesn’t look good for you. I’ll tell them I was forced to kill you both in self-defense. And the old lady won’t be of much help. I know where she lives. I’ll make sure she’s taken care of next.”

Faith tried not to take the bait no matter how hard it was.
