CHAPTER ELEVEN
Rye walked into the town offices ten minutes later. The clerk waved him on to the supervisorâs office. The planning board meeting was scheduled for the last Thursday of the month and Rye was here to hand over copies of the Plan A proposal he and Roseanne had drawn up.
He came to a stop inside the door.
Miles Conrad was sitting in the office. Heâd turned his chair to face the door so that Rye would see him right off. He saw him, all right. And the look on Conradâs face wasnât pretty.
âMr. Conrad, good morning. This is an unexpected pleasure.â
âShouldnât be all that unexpected when a manâs approached about his land options, then hung out to dry because thereâs a pretty woman involved. Thatâs not how things get done in Kendrick Creek, young man.â
The condescending tone was meant to put Rye in his place, but Rye had worked with planning and zoning boards for nearly two decades. Not much surprised him or threw him off his game. âYouâre on the planning board?â
âInterim chairman while Mick Hearst is recovering from surgery. That makes me the deciding vote.â
That was why Conradâs name hadnât turned up as theyâd done research on the townâs movers and shakers.
It wasnât the words as much as the tone that tipped Rye off that a tiebreak situation could happen. And if Miles Conrad had undue influence on any other board members, he could swing the vote negatively with relative ease. âThen Iâm glad youâre here.â Rye handed him a copy of the plan, then handed the other copies to the town supervisor. âThere are enough copies so that the entire town council will have their own to examine.â
The supervisor looked torn, but Rye wasnât sure if it was because of Conradâs animosity or the proposed subdivision. He accepted the folder and motioned Rye to sit. He reached out and shook Ryeâs hand with a solid grip. âItâs nice to meet you in person, Rye.â
âLikewise.â
The supervisor took his seat while Rye did the same. He opened the folder as he addressed Rye. âI knew your grandmother well. My wife bought two of her quilts for our daughters a few years back. Beautiful workmanship.â
Rye smiled. âI appreciate that, sir. Grandmaw was a corker. She did her best at anything she put her hand to and helped raise me the same way. When my partner and I look at areas for subdivision or renovation, we look down the long road. Weâre not a short-term company. Weâre in for the long haul or weâre not in at all. And the list you have there, of references and projects weâve overseen, examples our philosophy.â
âI saw that in the preliminary proposal,â noted the supervisor. âI appreciate that youâre going over things with us ahead of time. It saves time at the meeting.â
âGlad to do it,â Rye replied. âAnswering questions up front is always a good first step. Better that we all go into the meeting with the best understanding of the proposal.â
âWhich is why Iâm here.
