NOWHERE TO HIDE

Emma fought through a throng of paparazzi to get into the upscale restaurant where Jason waited for her. She stepped into the safety of the foyer, dizzy and blinded by the flashes. She took a beat to collect herself before answering the hostess who was finally coming into view.

“I’m meeting Jason Starr.”

The hostess nodded and ushered Emma to the table where Jason sat. A vase of roses snuggled a candle in the middle of the linen-covered booth. He stood and greeted her with a hug. Emma felt like all eyes were on her, but tried to act natural. Nevertheless, her body went stiff in his arms.

“You’re popular,” Jason said with a nod to the large windows, the only thing protecting Emma from the mob of photographers outside.

“I seriously don’t understand why anyone would care about me,” she said as she slid into the booth.

“Don’t be so modest,” he replied.

A waiter came by and showed Jason a bottle of wine. He nodded, and the waiter poured him a taste. Jason smelled the wine and swished the pink liquid in his mouth. He nodded his approval, and the waiter poured two glasses of the rosé.

“I took the liberty of ordering the best bottle,” Jason said.

Emma nodded and took a sip. She preferred red, but smiled politely.

Jason told her how beautiful she looked, which got a more genuine smile out of her.

A woman in her late thirties approached their table. She cleared her throat to signal her presence. Emma broke Jason’s gaze to welcome the woman.

“Excuse me, I’m so sorry to bother you,” the woman said. “Can I have your autograph?”

Emma looked at Jason. He smiled back at her and motioned his head toward the woman. Emma looked back at the woman again, who was staring at Emma with expectation.

“Me? You want my autograph?” Emma asked. The woman nodded. “Oh, I thought you were asking him.”

The fan turned to Jason and asked, “Are you famous too?” Jason laughed and shook his head.

“This is Jason Starr. He’s a big deal in the world of journalism,” Emma replied. The woman shrugged her shoulders and handed Emma a napkin and pen. She obliged and signed her name.

“You and Ryan seem so in love, Emma. Do you have any advice for me? I don’t want to be single forever,” the woman said.

“I’m not the right person to ask. My love life has been… interesting, but not one to emulate.” Emma handed the napkin and pen back to the woman who gushed gratitude as she walked back to her table of girlfriends, who whispered and laughed at their table across the room.

Emma turned back to Jason. “I’m so sorry. How embarrassing.”

Jason gave his best pleading, puppy-dog eyes and joked, “Got any love advice for me?”

Emma laughed and shrugged her shoulders. Her cheeks blushed with embarrassment.

“Your relationship with Ryan is going that well, huh?” Jason asked.

Emma sighed. “It’s not exactly an ideal set up.”

“What do you mean?”

Emma fidgeted with her napkin. “You don’t want to hear about my relationship with Ryan.
