Chapter Six

“Since you’re here and not under Evan, I assume day one didn’t go so well?”

Maggie let out an exasperated sigh and dropped her hands to her side. Out of the blue, she’d received a call from one of her previous customers, requesting a sleeping draft. Since she hadn’t had a client for her natural-healing practice in over six months, it was more than a little exciting, but try as she may, she couldn’t get the valerian to cooperate. After the fifth failed attempt, she opted to pull out the magic and was just about to finish the potion when Annabel came in the front door.

“You’re breaking my concentration,” Maggie muttered.

“You wanna talk to me about broken concentration? You should see what my business partner, Jenna, has going on in her house. That thing is haunted like whoa.” Annabel flopped down on the couch, directly in front of Maggie’s worktable. “Something that awesome, you’d have thought she’d tell me about it. Of course, she has been out of town for a freaking year, but she asked me to come over and help her pick out fabric swatches for a new couch and there he was, plain as day, sitting on the kitchen counter. Well, I say sitting, but more like hovering or floating or whatever ghosts do.” Annabel watched Maggie fumble with the mortar and pestle. “Wanna talk about it?”

“Not particularly, no.” Maggie continued to fumble with the belladonna, measuring it three times before she was comfortable with the dosage.

“I think we need wine,” Annabel said.

Maggie looked up from what she was doing and, with a huff, concentrated on a wine bottle and one of the glasses that was on the sideboard. She followed their progress in the air until they came to rest on the end table next to Annabel.

“Where’s yours?” she said, pouring herself a glass.

She couldn’t focus on the task at hand, not with Annabel hovering about, so if drinking a glass of wine would make her zip it, then that’s what she would do. She started to walk over to the sideboards, but Anna clucked her tongue.

“Stop dabbling,” Anna said. “You’re either a magical being, or you’re not. Come sit down and then get your glass. I insist.”

Exasperated, Maggie did what Annabel said. She flopped onto the sofa next to her sister and repeated the process, focusing on a glass, willing it to come to her. Once it reached her hand, she held it out to Anna.

“Fill it all the way, if you don’t mind.”

“That sort of day, was it?”

Maggie watched the blood red Cabernet slip into her glass until it was nearly full to the rim. She lifted it in a silent toast to Annabel and took a huge gulp.

“Guess so,” Anna muttered, filling her glass as well.

“I don’t get it,” Maggie said before taking a sip. “I don’t get how the universe can cock up something so bad.”

Annabel opened her mouth to say something but exercised uncharacteristic restraint as Maggie tucked her feet under her body and continued to talk.
