“Marisa, beautiful!”

The guy’s grating voice already had me prone to disliking him, but then Marisa slid her arm from mine and went straight to the man, wrapping her arms around his neck in a quick hug and I decided.

Yeah, I really didn’t like him.

He was in a skin-tight metallic blue shirt—baby blue, not steel blue. I’m not a vain guy, but if I’d been asked? I looked better than he did. His gaze bounced past me, then returned and there was a fine tightening around his lips that made me think maybe he’d sized me up as competition and saw something he didn’t like. He had the pretty-boy looks that were common in Hollywood, but he also had that smug attitude I’d come to recognize—and loathe. As Marisa stepped back, I moved to take my place at her side and put my hand on the small of her back.

“Did your dad send a bodyguard, babe?” He smiled as he said it, but the dismissive way he looked at me made it clear he wasn’t pleased to see she’d brought a guy.

“I’m not her bodyguard,” I replied before Marisa could say anything.

“Riley’s a friend.” Marisa put a hand on the guy’s arm. “Riley, this is Cliff.”

Cliff laughed. “I don’t think you need to introduce me, babe.”

That condescending way he said it told me he expected me to recognize him. He looked familiar, although I couldn’t put my finger on why. Cocking my head, I gave him a bland smile. “Why not?”

Marisa shifted next to me, her posture tensing subtly. I wondered if I’d made a mistake, but I wasn’t about to admit it.

“Dude, you serious?” Cliff was staring at me.

“Riley’s joking, Cliff.” Marisa took my hand and squeezed, laughing softly. “He’s got a very, very dry sense of humor. I mean, everybody knows who you are—who wouldn’t know Cliff Farrell, right?”

The name rang a bell, and as Cliff narrowed his eyes, scrutinizing me, I shrugged. “Marisa’s right, man. Sorry. I’ve got a weird sense of humor—not too many people know how to take it.”

Cliff laughed then, and Marisa relaxed. Because I was here to keep her happy, I told myself to let it go. It was about what she needed.

But then she went to hook her arm through Cliff’s. “Why don’t you show me around your home? I saw pics online when the interview hit Rolling Stone, but something tells me they didn’t do the place justice?”

“Sure babe. But you have to tell me about the movie deal.” He glanced at me. “Ryan, make yourself at home.”

I went to correct him about my name. Marisa saw my face and came back, kissed me, her mouth touching the corner of my lips. “Get me a drink, okay, baby? I’m thirsty. I’ll be right back.”

“Sure.” I cupped her hip and brushed my lips across hers, felt her breath stutter. Almost immediately, she leaned into me for a proper kiss, though not a long one. “I’ll find you in a few minutes.” Directing my gaze toward Cliff, and his hard glare, I smiled.
