Chester C. Doherty (top row), first lieutenant colonel and assistant commandant of the School of Air Evacuation, and, from left to right, Captains Edwin McBride and John Horton and Maj. Russell Smith are pictured. They played crucial roles in making Bowman Field a success story by effectively training troops.

Here are snapshots of the School of Air Evacuation with commentary and six photos, including Eleanor Roosevelt, the president’s wife, at Bowman Field on January 27, 1944.

Pictured are Maj. Gen. David N. W. Grant (left), air surgeon, and Lt. Col. John R. McGraw (third from left), commanding officer of AAF School of Air Evacuation, with Eleanor Roosevelt being interviewed by a reporter at Bowman Field. Roosevelt visited Bowman Field on January 27, 1944, to view the female nurses and the facilities. Roosevelt was justly proud of these women who, like the men, entered the forward combat zones to retrieve wounded soldiers to get them to safety and recovery as soon as possible by risking their lives. Roosevelt said of the nurses and facilities that they were “excellent.”
