Of all the university-trained professionals to investigate the southern Illinois controversy, Cook was perhaps the best qualified. Given his eminent background, scientific credentials, and particularly his rare open-mindedness, his elementary interest in the cave went far to champion its prehistoric credibility. Indeed, he was an outspoken proponent of its retrieved objects as legitimate artifacts. His keen powers of observation allowed him to distinguish easily enough between pristine evidence and evidence that had been tampered with.

Russell Burrows and Jack Ward were naturally honored by Cook’s enthusiastic support of their efforts, and they invited him to join their Artifact Recovery Exchange as its project director. He threw all his energies into not only establishing the site’s authenticity beyond question, but also unraveling the mystery of its ancient inhabitants, including where they came from and when. All the tablets in the A.R.E.’s collection were placed at his disposal, although even the prestigious Cook was not allowed entrance to the cave. He good-naturedly set to work, however, studying the numerous inscriptions with their puzzling profiles of strangely attired men and women. After only a few months, he was ready to conclude:

Burrows Cave’s carved and inscribed stones are not modern forgeries. There is no doubt but what the many hundreds of stones would necessitate thousands of hours of skilled incising by a veritable platoon of inscribers, all at home with a style of line, letter, and a cultural, mental and physical imagery foreign to modern forgers. With several notable exceptions, most are singular artistic compositions, not directly copiable from known illustrations of ancient relics. They are often executed with great beauty, and, in my opinion, skilled epigraphers—of which there are very few in America—will eventually extract meaningful translations from many of them.
