Chapter Nine

Karma

This is a strength born in misery.

A focus cut of this insanity.

I fight my way from the gates of hell.

I hold on.

“Today they hurt us; next they kill us. Quietly teach our brothers and sisters of what the Celestials do to our people. We will take a stand, but for now, we must remain in the shadows,” Kana discreetly shared with a small group of Vexxus citizens in an alleyway outside of the market center. Each small group came and went. She spread the words that she hoped would swell a desire for the dredge to fight for themselves one day.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t believe you. Please leave me alone.” A man cast her aside, keeping on with his shopping.

“We already understand the nature of our oppressors, we’re powerless to stop them,” an elder chastised.

“Wow, that sounds crazy. But I’m only twelve.” A young boy showed enthusiasm for the outlandish information he was just told, but raised his arms and shoulders, then ran away to catch up with his parents.

After a few minutes of kindness, the ladies, after listening to Kana’s stories, moved along without so much as a single swayed thought.

“Miss Kana,” a familiar voice called out to her.

“Yes?” She spun around to a recognizable face. “Oh, it’s you. From the tea shop.”

The hunched over asian man let out a small chuckle.

“Very perceptive, though, I’m not sure there are many men my age wandering these streets. May I ask why you’re going from group to group, person to person, bothering them like you’re some missionary?” he asked.

Kana’s shoulders tensed upwards; her head lowered a bit.

“Sir, I know last time we spoke you told me not to chase shadows, but a light was cast upon what is being done to our people. I’m trying to make a difference.”

“Very noble of you; however, you are drawing attention to yourself. You have been completely oblivious to your surroundings, which, from what I’ve gathered, is quite unlike you. But how fortunate for you, I am a man with nothing better to do but to sit and sip tea and watch the world around me.”

“What do you mean?”

“You failed to notice the three Spectres who just began patrol in the area. Much more of this and the community may not have the pleasure of your company. So, whatever it is you are doing,
