Chapter 27
The first day of camp went well. Alastair and Robson greeted Charlotte with enormous sweaty hugs, bubbling over with enthusiasm. âI won two matches in the tennis tournament!â declared Robson.
Alastair proudly displayed a papier mâché mask heâd made during craft hour. âItâs meant to be Egyptian,â he said. âMiss Kirkwood said it was excellent.â
âThatâs fantastic,â said Charlotte, delving into her bag for juice boxes and Laughing Cow cheese sandwiches. âHow was lunch?â
âMeh.â Robson pulled a face. âIt was fish, and I donât like fish except for tinned tuna.â
âHey, guys.â Sadie appeared, fanning herself with the local newspaper. âWho fancies a barbecue back at ours?â
The children shrieked with delight. âHave you got sausages?â asked Alastair. âI love sausages.â
âAre you sure you want us to come over?â asked Charlotte. âI donât want to put you to any trouble.â
Sadie shook her head. âRickâs home and he loves nothing more than donning his apron and wielding his tongs. And, yes, we have sausages: British ones!â
Out of the corner of her eye, Charlotte spotted Jürgen making his way up the path. Marcus, along with a bunch of older students, was acting as a volunteer helper at the camp. She gave Jürgen a brief wave, and he returned the gesture.
Just then, Pamela strode out of the chalet, a sobbing Elspeth clinging to her side. âBloody hell, itâs not the end of the world,â she hissed at her daughter as Rebecca shuffled out behind them. âIâm sure it was an accident.â
âWhatâs up?â asked Charlotte, passing Elspeth a pack of tissues.
âOh, they were doing some painting thing, and Rebecca tipped a cup of water over Elspethâs âmasterpieceâ,â Pamela replied.
âShe did it on purpose,â gulped Elspeth, blowing her nose vigorously. âCos mine was better than hers.â
âYouâll join us for a barbecue too, wonât you?â Sadie gave Elspeth a quick squeeze. âIâve made banoffee pie for afters.â She turned to Charlotte, and whispered, âShould I invite Jürgen and Marcus too? The more the merrier, butâ¦â
Charlotte wasnât sure how to answer. Based on Pamelaâs loathing of Jürgen, she didnât think it a good idea. Then again, they only had Pamelaâs version of events, and doubt still niggled in Charlotteâs mind.
âToo late. Theyâve gone,â said Sadie. Sure enough, Jürgen and Marcus were heading back down the path.
Rick greeted the group with a jug of Pimms and non-alcoholic fruit punch for the children. âI promise itâs not lethal strength,â he said, pouring the concoction into highball glasses.
âMissing Dom?â asked Sadie, fishing out a strawberry and popping it in her mouth.
âHardly. Heâs only been gone one night,â replied Charlotte. Heâd rung to say heâd arrived safely, and that his dad was on excellent form, his mum less so. Relief swept over Charlotte when Dom said he couldnât stay on long. Heâd talked briefly to the boys, then ended the call.
âIâm rubbish when Rick travels,â said Sadie. âEven though weâve an alarm system, Iâm always convinced some random lunatic will break in and steal all our valuables.â
Crime rates werenât particularly high in the area, but there had been a recent spate of burglaries.
