It took just over an hour to get to Dickey Flat, which sped by super fast thanks to Cam’s singing, Manu’s tapping, and the delightful sound of Bianca and Stacey’s laughter. It felt like old times again, and when we pulled in and parked next to the white family wagon, we were all in high spirits.

The sun had come out to play, taking the chill out of the air and making me feel like summer was thinking about returning over the next few months.

Fine by me.

I love the heat.

And so does Stace.

I watch her chatting with Bianca as we wait for Beck to pull in with the ute.

There’s hardly anyone around. I scan the other cars—a blue Ford, a dirt-covered van and a red-hot Honda civic.

“Looks like we’ll have the pick of the lot.” Beck grins as he walks over to us. Rubbing his hands together, he takes a deep breath, obviously feeling pretty happy. I haven’t seen his smile quite so big before. “Let’s go for a wander and pick a spot. Then we can come back and get the gear.”

We trail after the big guy and wander past the two boulders that signify the entrance to the camping area. This place is really beautiful. There’s an idyllic river meandering by on the left and every shade of green you can imagine. Tall trees border the camping area, some of them green, some starting to blossom, and a few still naked from the winter season. We walk the narrow, undulating dirt path, surveying patches of flat grass to our left and right.

Beck eventually decides that the huge flat area on the right will be perfect. I could tell he kind of wanted the one on the left, closer to the river, but a group of tents is already there.

“Let’s pitch in a circle formation, all pointing in toward each other, and not too close to the path.”

“Where’s the bathroom?” Stacey wiggles her legs, and Beck points to a hill behind us.

“Up there. Long drops.”

Stacey’s expression flatlines. “Excuse me?”

“Long drop toilets.”

“Ah, gross.”

“Ah, camping.” Beck winks at her and strides past. “Meet us at the cars once you’re done. Let’s get our site set up.”

Stacey makes a gagging face and I snicker, shooting her a sympathetic smile. She swallows convulsively and heads up the hill, with Bianca in tow, while we troop back to the cars.

Beck has us line up, and we unload one vehicle at a time. It’s a hell of a lot of stuff considering we’re only here for two nights, but I guess that’s camping. I carry the weighty pack, wondering what the heck Stacey put in here. She obviously doesn’t know the meaning of “pack light.” Dropping the bag at my feet, I run back to help Manu with the chilly bin. We bought two of them. With this many people, you need a lot of food. And these chillies are like industrial. We’ve got one at home. They keep the food cold for way longer than the standard one you might take to a barbecue.
