Bowman barreled Van Dyke away. Phelps grabbed Sweeney and the friends sprinted between the tiers. Workers aimed their gauntlets down at the fugitives and lasers showered Bowman’s head.

Shots blasted into the towers of components, screens, and arrays on all sides. Debris, sparks, and shrapnel pocked Bowman’s scalp as all those devices detonated. He couldn’t tell if the Pterans blew up their own command controls or if his crew did it with their repeaters.

Bowman veered around a huge tower and the structure groaned behind him. One of the massive tiers listed sideways and then crashed into the tier next to it. That one rocked…and held.

Shrieks and thunderous crashes resounded through the chamber. Bowman cast a desperate glance around and spotted dozens of Pterans streaking for him. Their wings hummed and their gauntlets spat lasers.

He sprang for the next tier and the Pterans’ lasers plastered it behind his heels. More components blew in geysers of metal scrap and shorted electricity. The tier gave an agonized ripping sound and toppled right on top of him.

He couldn’t get away in time. So many Pterans hounded him from all sides that he took the only available escape route. He dove headfirst under the falling tier. He ducked under his raised arms for the slightest protection they could give him.

The towering shelf smashed into the next tier and shattered components splintered the floor in front of Bowman, but he couldn’t stop now. The two tiers formed a tunnel from one side of the command center to the other. He couldn’t hope he wouldn’t run into countless Pterans there, too, but what the hell did he have to lose?

He sprinted through the opening and burst out on the other side...right in front of the dais. Ieko stood behind her railing watching the whole catastrophe unfold.

He skidded to a halt, and for the second time in a few minutes, they locked their gazes on each other. A powerful surge of hatred welled up in Bowman’s soul. If he didn’t care so much about getting his people home alive, he would throw away all hope of escaping if he could only kill her right now.

She must have been thinking the same thing about him. She took flight so fast he didn’t have time to get away. He focused so intently on how much he hated her that he didn’t see her wings start to whir. One minute, she stood on her dais as still as a statue. The next, she plunged at him and hit him with impossible force.

She smacked him over onto his back and then she was on top of him. She didn’t blow him away with her gauntlets. She gripped him with her scratching chitinous forelimb. He didn’t see how she grabbed him. Some hard-shelled claw pinched his neck and cut off his breath.

He stared up into her cruel eyes and all his fury erupted as never before. He hauled back his fist and punched her with all his strength. He pounded the side of her head and even hit her in the eyes a few times, but nothing loosened her grip.
