CHAPTER 28
The morning before the second, and final, show in Denver, Adriana sat at her desk. She couldnât say she was working because that would require more than a blank stare and racing mind, but her laptop was open and her face was pointed at it.
She had a dozen calls to make, and it would be a good time to make them. Noah had woken up with the sun to push more cardio on Roxy. Heâd also made them all activated charcoal smoothies. Once she got past the idea that she was drinking sludge, it had actually been okay.
Then the three of them were off, running a three-mile trail along some Denver canal despite the cold, wet morning. She was alone on the bus. The chill creeping in through the windows and seeping into her bones.
Adriana only ever seemed to notice the cold when Roxy wasnât around, she realized, before getting up from her desk. Maybe she should have gone on the run with them. At least then sheâd have something to do with her restless body.
No, sheâd been right to skip it. She was a rower, not a runner, and she was apparently never going to acclimate to the thin air at the high elevation. Her thoughts were a congealed, complex mess and she couldnât shake the dizziness.
At least the guys had put all their bags in one of the extra bunks, so she didnât trip over them on the way to her small closet. The bathroom was packed with triple the amount of products, but it was organized⦠even if it was crowded.
In her closet, Adriana found a thick, gray cardigan and pulled it on over her black-and-white striped dress. Closing her eyes, she imagined it was the heat from Roxyâs body warming her.
Iâm losing my mind, Adriana decided.
She should be drowning in guilt. Should be regretting having gone into Roxyâs shower, knowing sheâd be back soon. That sheâd probably catch her in there if she took her time washing her hair. Should be embarrassed by what sheâd done in front of her⦠what sheâd let her see.
Resting her forehead against her bunk, Adriana couldnât bring herself to feel any of those things. The only clear thoughts she had were memories of Roxy. The sensation of her lips on hers, the unexpectedly soft sigh she breathed against Adrianaâs ear after a very quick orgasm.
Adrianaâs chest tightened before she fully formed the thought. She could still feel Roxyâs palm pressed to her racing heart. It had been so tender. So sweet. Not what sheâd expected after a wildly inappropriate moment.
No. She didnât feel shame or regret. All she could feel was Roxyâs absence. All she could do was miss her laying in bed next to her. Miss the way Roxy felt curled against her side. New but familiar.
Youâre so stupid. Adriana bumped her head against the bunk. So stupid. Yearning for time alone with Roxy, eating gross diner food rather than antioxidants or whatever the hell Noah was feeding them.
