The recording rig had remained running, even when she was out cold, so Katrina had been able to play back the audio track from the clinic bed where she woke up. Most of everything had been a blur from the moment the bank truck broadsided her vehicle, clear as a bell when she slowed the video down enough to see it emerge from a side street, timed perfectly since they knew right where she was.

“Ah,” a nurse said as she peaked in the door. “You’re awake. Good. You have a visitor.”

I do? Who would even know where I was? Let alone want to see me.

Constance Ehrlynmeyer entered a moment later, closing the door and locking it before she turned to study Katrina.

Early fifties. Shoulder-length hair starting to gray from dirty blond. That stoutness that some women get with age, to go with the crow’s feet and liver spots.

Katrina double-checked that all the recording equipment was currently turned off. No sense in needing to blackmail the woman.

“I wasn’t sure, in those first few moments,” Constance said as she moved closer. “I couldn’t tell if it was a legitimate attempt at a hostile takeover by a third party, or if you had set Everett up and were planning to get a second payday with a nifty double-cross.”

The woman sat in the only chair and fixed Katrina with a stern gaze. Katrina could see how Constance had managed to build up a company from nothing. The woman was steel and fire, like Katrina wanted to be when she grew up.

If she ever decided to.

“I had the same thought,” Katrina replied simply.

There was no point in trying any evasions at this point.

“I wondered if I had managed to give you the perfect alibi,” Katrina continued. “An innocent bystander to make it look like you just wanted to catch him committing adultery, and ended up having him killed instead.”

“I don’t want Ev dead,” Constance said. “I mostly wanted to shock him into behaving better. Thus you and the Third Eye recording. That wasn’t for me to watch. I was going to have him confront what he did. I don’t mind the affairs. I mind that he treats the women so poorly. I wouldn’t tolerate it, so I thought he had stopped. Turned out he had just started doing it to others instead.”

“And the story about a divorce?” Katrina asked, shocked at the callous mindset of the woman.

But were the rich really just like you and me?

“Oh, I might have used it, had he not changed his ways,” Constance chuckled like a leopard seal spotting a penguin. “That was for you, to get you to set him up properly. He’s really not a bad fuck, but his roughness, his brutality is getting worse as he gets older, and I don’t want a lawsuit damaging the stock price.”

Katrina nodded.

It made perfect sense, if you were completely batshit insane. All behavior was acceptable, as long as you kept it private. When it got out of hand, someone had to step in and do something about it.
