Chapter 31

BY 10.17 THAT NIGHT, Stella was glad that she’d come to the hotel. She’d arrived, waved at David behind the reception desk and gone straight up to Fitz’s room in the lift.

He’d opened the door and wordlessly reached for her, wrapping one arm around Stella’s back and pulling her into him. They’d kissed, increasingly frantically, and fallen on the bed together, where Fitz had quickly removed every piece of her clothing. As they’d carried on kissing, his hands had roamed across her body, down to between her legs, and it had only taken a minute before Stella felt herself climax, groaning into his mouth as she did. Then she’d climbed on top of him, relishing – for a moment – the power of having Fitz underneath her, inside her, rocking underneath her until he came, with a roar, gripping Stella’s hips to keep her in place above him.

‘Good evening, Miss Shakespeare,’ he said huskily into her ear as Stella lowered herself, her chest lying on his, her thighs either side of him.

She glanced at the clock on his bedside table: 10.17 p.m.

‘Hi,’ she whispered back with a small laugh. Then she pushed herself up. ‘Glad I came?’

Fitz’s blue eyes crinkled. ‘Delighted.’

She dropped her head for another kiss before moving to lie beside him.

‘I’m sorry it’s late,’ Fitz said, lifting one arm so she could move herself underneath it. He ran his fingers through her hair. ‘It won’t always be like this.’

‘That’s OK, I get you’re busy.’ If he’d said it wouldn’t always be like this, that implied he was thinking about the future. He’d never said as much before and it felt like a small but significant step forward. ‘How’s the deal?’

‘A bloody nightmare,’ he replied, turning his head to press his mouth against her temple. ‘But it’ll be done eventually. How’s your week been?’

Stella circled her nails around his chest. ‘It’s been… weird. Billie started her radiation on Monday.’

‘How’s she feeling?’

‘All right, but it’s only been three sessions. I think it’s cumulative, so she may be less all right in a week.’

‘She’ll be fine,’ Fitz murmured, brushing his lips against her head again. ‘Life is light and dark for everyone at different times.’

‘That’s very philosophical.’ Stella lifted her head and frowned. She’d observed this with him; he’d have sudden moments of introspection and come out with something very serious before snapping out of it again as if he’d been in a trance.

Fitz gave her a strange look, almost wistful. ‘Trust me, if I’ve learned anything in this life, it’s that it’s always changing. Nothing stays the same. The trick is never to get too comfortable because as soon as you do it’ll change again.’

‘You OK?’

He nodded, squeezing her into him. ‘I’m fine, tired. Long week. And I… well, I missed you.’

It was the most affectionate thing he’d ever said to her. ‘I missed you too,’ she replied, enjoying the feel of the words as they left her mouth. She kissed his shoulder and laid her head down. ‘How
