Chapter Twelve

‡

“Oh, you can bring him every day if you want,” the housekeeper at Greeley Range Ranch told Dylan, casually at lunch-time, about Tyler.

Tyler had already finished his packed sandwich, cookie, and juice, and had gone to shuttle up and down the slide that formed part of a professionally landscaped and fenced children’s play area—tucked over to the left of the house, where it wouldn’t obscure the glorious mountain views.

Dylan was still munching, seated outside in one of the slate-blue Adirondack chairs that coordinated perfectly with the stone paving of this wide terrace, and the scarlet geraniums in tubs, some of which looked like the deer had found them.

“Are you sure?” he answered the housekeeper, who’d brought her own sandwich lunch out here, also. “What if Mr—?”

“He’s not planning to be here again until the work is done,” she cut in. “You’re fine. Tyler can watch TV in the guest cottage, or play outside, whatever he likes. Bring a friend.”

“He’s only in Marietta a few weeks. He doesn’t have any friends in this area, unfortunately.” Dylan wondered about that. How could he find some local kids for his son to hang out with?

“He can even ride one of the ponies, if he wants. He’s been a sweetheart, this morning.”

“He doesn’t know how to ride, so I think we’ll have to say no to that one, too. Thank you for keeping him busy.”

“You’re more than welcome, hon.” Mrs. Turnbull looked at him with perceptive, motherly eyes, which coaxed him to further speech.

“I thought he’d help me and the crew with stripping out, and he’s been doing a bit of that, but it’s a long day for a kid.”

“And messy work.”

“That’s right. But I don’t want to leave him in a vacation program all day—I booked one, and then I cancelled it—because I don’t get to see that much of him. He lives with his mom and stepdad, and… yeah, as I said, I only have him with me for a few weeks.” Dylan thought about Edge’s telling silence last night on the phone, and added, “Although that may change. We’re still working things out.”

It had been a strange, unsettling morning, following his largely sleepless night. The alarm on his phone at six-fifteen had dragged him up from what could only have been an hour of real rest. He’d gone to sleep angry, and he’d woken the same way, his heart sore for Tyler and his resolve strong.

His son was not going to feel unwanted.

Ever.

“C’mon, bud,” he’d said, in the doorway of the cramped and crowded study. “Early start.” He thought he’d wait until they were on the road before telling Tyler about his new baby sister.

They’d breakfasted quickly and headed out, while Jasmine was only just beginning to stir. She’d begun getting to the bathroom and up and down the stairs by herself last night, stubborn and determined about it, even though the stairs involved inching herself on her backside, step by step. “I can’t stand having you do everything for me, Dylan.
