ALBUQUERQUE OLD TOWN

Some of the quaint adobe buildings that line the alleyways of Old Town began life as private residences in 1706, when the first 15 Spanish families called the newly named ‘Alburquerque’ their home (yes, it originally had an extra ‘r’, which somehow got lost after the Americans took over). Until the arrival of the railroad in 1880, Old Town Plaza was the hub of daily life. With many museums, galleries and original buildings within walking distance, this is the city’s most popular tourist area. As you walk around, keep your mind’s eye trained partly on the past. Imagine this area as it began, with a handful of hopeful families grateful to have survived a trek across hundreds of miles of desert wilderness.
