CITY OF MONUMENTS

A. L. METCALF

9TH NEW YORK CAVALRY

Houston, Texas

Houston Post

June 25, 1913

From a Union Veteran

To The Post,

Gettysburg seems to be in the public eye, and the writer has an intense desire to join the grand armies in their pilgrimage to the greatest battlefield ever in history, and more desirous for the fact that he happened to be in that town when visited by the men in gray 50 years ago. Two regiments, the Eighth Illinois and Ninth New York of Buford’s cavalry, claimed the honor of having brought on the gory battle, whose anniversary we are soon to celebrate. The question was settled, however, by the Battlefield Memorial Association and the following record was made:

“At a meeting held July 3, 1888, a committee of the Ninth New York Cavalry appeared before the board and established to the entire satisfaction of those present that this regiment fired the first shot of July 1, 1863”

The association voted unanimously to allow two tablets in bronze to be placed on our monument vix: “Discovering the Enemy” and ‘Picket on Chambersburg Road fired at 5 a. m., July 1.”

The bronze alto relievo of a mounted cavalry picket with the legend underneath, “Discovering the Enemy,” attracts wide attention. The work is by Casper Bubari of New York, one of the finest artists in the United States. So now I am going for the third time to visit this city of monuments, a place which has so “great a graveyard for so small a town,” whose glory rests in the hearts of the living and on the tombs of the dead, the Westminster Abbey of America.

A. L. Metcalf,

Ninth New York Cavalry
