Heathrow Terminals 1,2,3 Station
âSo, is that what all the best editors are wearing this year?â Kirsty asked as Jenny hefted one of her friendâs suitcases onto the escalator. âI thought youâd look more, well, bookish.â
Once Jenny had made sure that the suitcase was secure on its stair, she gave a little shimmy. âThis is the unofficial office uniform.â
This was a strappy black vest, a fine-knit pale blue cardigan, grey hipster trousers and Jennyâs trusty Dunlop Green Flash trainers.
âOf course, when Iâm not helping my friend cart half her worldly goods across London, I dress a bit smarter. If Iâm having lunch with a writer or agent, something like that.â
Kirsty dared to take a hand off the suitcase that she had propped on the step behind her so she could pat Jennyâs shoulder. âGet you! Doing lunch with fancy writing folk. Do you have a company credit card?â
âYes! I can hardly believe theyâve trusted me with one.â Jenny couldnât pretend to be blasé about it. Besides, she was reunited with Kirsty who wouldnât expect her to be. âEven better than that, I have my own business cards. Iâll give you one once weâre on the tube.â
âIâm so proud of you. Jennifer Richards, editor. Such a nice ring to it.â
âEditor, I still canât believe it,â Jenny said, because sheâd started at Lyttons in January as an Assistant Editor but through a combination of being over-qualified for the job, a couple of editors leaving and the sheer luck, for once, of being in the right place at exactly the right time, sheâd been promoted to Editor by Easter.
She was still very much learning the ropes but the three writers sheâd inherited and the one writer sheâd acquired hadnât yet turned round and said, âExcuse me, but weâd like a proper editor and not this . . . this imposter!â
But today was all about Kirsty. Which was why Jenny had booked the afternoon off to meet her best friend and her best friendâs two suitcases and assortment of big blue IKEA bags. Kirsty was back in town. For good this time. Her strapping boyfriend, Erik the Viking (actually he was a leading expert in Urban Studies), whom sheâd acquired while she was in Stockholm, was following at a later date. âNever mind my company credit card, I have a best friend whoâs the new curator at a top London museum.â
âAssistant curator at a museum in the back of beyond that no oneâs ever heard of,â Kirsty insisted, but she took her hand off her suitcase again to prod Jenny in the back. âWeâre not doing too bad, are we?â
âWe are not,â Jenny confirmed and she was just about to list the itinerary she had planned for Kirstyâs first weekend back in London: back to Jennyâs flat in Notting Hill to dump Kirstyâs stuff, dinner at The Seashell in Lisson Grove, the best fish and chip shop in London. Tomorrow theyâd explore Portobello Road market, then head over
