Quietly and perfectly situated on a traffic-free and gas-lit court, this excellent hotel is one of Covent Garden’s hidden gems. Its en-suite rooms are a firm favourite with visiting performers, since it’s just a few yards from the Royal Opera House. Breakfast is extra. 6

Located off the south side of Soho Square, this early eighteenth-century building is a hotel of real character and charm, offering en-suite rooms decorated and furnished as close to period style as convenience and comfort allow. There’s a small sitting room, but no dining room (although some of London’s best restaurants are a stone’s throw away). Continental breakfast (served in the rooms) is available, but isn’t included in the rates. 9
