CIANNA

My mind was hazy when I woke to find myself on a bed in a strange room. A room that was not filled with dull yellow smoke. A horrible taste filled my mouth, but getting air into my lungs seemed to be a little easier. The sweet odor lacing the fumes I had inhaled still clung to my clothes, confirming that the fire had not been my imagination.

I could also smell Logan’s intoxicating scent and vaguely remembered being cradled in his arms as he told me everything would be okay and carried somewhere safe. I tried to sit up, but the wave of nausea and pain shooting across my skull forced me to return my head to the pillow. It was a good thing that I hadn’t been able to leave the bed; otherwise, I would not have overheard Logan arguing with Vurell and demanding he be allowed to stay by my side.

Hearing Vaden’s voice and knowing I had not lost him to the fire eased some of my concerns. It was the tone accompanying Logan’s words that had my heart racing and gave me hope I might one day be able to tell him what he was to me, what he meant to me. It was Vurell asking Logan if he was my ketiorron that had me inhaling deeply to settle my stomach so I could rise from the bed. I was certain Raytan knew of our connection and had not said anything to Logan, but if the older male was aware as well, could I trust him to keep the information to himself?

My troubled thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps and the appearance of Vurell in the doorway. “Cianna,” he said as he entered the room. “I am glad to see you are awake.” He wore a light shirt over his tunic, the front covered with an array of various colored spots. I wondered if the thin cylinder filled with an orange liquid he carried had been responsible for the awful taste on my tongue. “How are you feeling?”

I would have responded by telling him the pain in my head felt as if I had been smacked with my serving tray but refrained when Vaden appeared in the doorway behind him. I did not want the worry furrowing my sibling’s brow to get any worse, so I said, “Better.”

“Even so, I have prepared additional elixir. It will help with your sore throat and prevent an infection from developing in your lungs,” Vurell said as he handed me the cylinder. “I apologize that the taste is horrendous, but you must drink all of it.”

“Okay,” I said, taking a sip and coughing.

Vaden leaned against the door frame and grinned. “It goes down easier if you do not breathe when you swallow.”

I glowered at Vaden. “Thanks for waiting to mention that fact until after I got some in my mouth.” There would be no pretending I had finished drinking the liquid, not with the determined looks I received from both males.
