CHAPTER 36

Crumb heaved his case of beer down through the hatch from his ship’s floor with nothing more than a “heads up!” Which rightly, yet unfortunately, caused Wicked to look up, which wasn’t where the case of beer was coming from in his perspective. From Wicked’s point of view, it was coming up from the floor.

It passed through the gravitational change and stopped right at Wick’s chest as if it were a ball tossed in the air reaching its climax. This caused him to take a step back, and luckily, he managed to catch it—with Severn’s reflexes offering a couple of hands in support.

“Whoa, there! Don’t go droppin’ our beer now,” Crumb shouted as he launched himself through the opening, feet shuffling to keep his balance. Drake paused for a moment, and when everyone gave him a look to see if he was coming, he gave a nod as if to say, “Watch this.”

He took one step back before he ran to the hole where he then launched himself up in a twisting backflip. While in the air, Wicked guessed he rotated three full turns as he flipped backward twice. But that wasn’t even the impressive part. When he came up through the opening, he landed on the floor right in front of Severn on one foot with both arms straight out to the sides and his other leg straight back as if he were balancing on a ketchup bottle.

“Name’s Drake. Yours?” he said, offering his hand and then standing normally.

“Severn,” she said, shaking it. “And this is Wicked.”

He ignored Wick for the moment. “Well, look at you.” He let his eyes track down her body, “No doubt as tough as you are good lookin’.” He winked and then shifted his attention to Wicked, relieving him of the case of beer. “No doubt there’s a story behind that name of yours, eh? Maybe I’ll hear it after a few’a dese?”

“Don’t count on it,” Wick said, grimacing. He’d never been a fan of pushy people like Drake. The man didn’t seem like a horrible human being, but he apparently enjoyed taking over as soon as he arrived. To make matters worse, Drake eyed the cargo hold as if he were looking for something, and an uneasy feeling settled over Wick. Though he probably would have done the same thing on their ship.

“Right, then,” Crumb interjected himself. “Shall we kick off a game of dice?”

Severn glanced at Marko, who was standing off to the side, arms crossed, with a look on his face that said he’d rather not.

“You’ll have to teach us, but sure.” She looked back to Drake. “C’mon, the mess is this way.”

“You coming too, boy?” Drake said to Wicked. “Sure would like to hear that story.”

“Maybe another time,” Severn said. “He’s got work to do in the engine room.” She glanced at Wick, nodding him off with a grin. He figured she was telling him to take his alone time with Aura as it came, so he trotted off toward the engine room, hoping Aura would be there.
