Chapter Twelve
The dancing flames of the fire kept his attention long past the time Nava left. When the flames died, he stared at the coals instead. Those soon died out, too, and he closed his eyes. He rolled his neck around in a circle to his right and then back again, trying to loosen it up. With slow movements, he stood and went to his room. He lay down on his mat and fell into a fitful sleep.
The next morning, they worked together again, this time in silence. The roof was almost finished, and Rapha wondered what he would do when it was. Farming was out of the question here. It was much too warm and the dirt would let very little grow. I suppose I will have to simply figure out a way to feed us each day. Hunting for meat to eat and other edible plants would take many hours each day.
The day went by quickly as they worked together. He reached down to grab the next brick from Nava, something caught his attention. He stared across the desert a few more seconds until it came closer. A cloud of dust, and not a natural dust storm. This was made by a manâor many men.
His body tensed. He couldnât let them take Nava.
âRapha?â Nava asked. âWhat is it?â
âSomebodyâs coming. Get in the house.â
Nava spun around and looked. âBut why would they come here? Who might it be?â
âTo get you and take you away from me.â
âBut why? I told Abba I wanted to stay here.â
Rapha jumped off the roof and dragged Nava inside. He closed the gate he had made weeks before. âI donât know why. Maybe the elders thought you being here was a bad idea. Maybe Alon decided it was high time he got me back. Maybe your abba has had second thoughts about leaving you here.â
Nava shook her head. âHe may have had second thoughts, but he would never tell Alon where you are.â
âEither way, you need to go back with them.â
Nava gasped. âWhat? Why?â
âIt is the only way to peacefully resolve this.â
âWe donât even know what this is!â Nava pointed toward the growing dust cloud. âThe only way Iâll go is if you tell me to go.â
Rapha glowered at her in an attempt to intimidate her and gestured to the house. âDo you see this? We made it together, just the two of us. Yet I want you to go have a life outside of this primitive place. I canât bear to think what you could have had if you hadnât been here.â
Nava took a step backward. âI know my life might be easier if I wasnât here, but what do you want? If the choice were up to you, what would you do? Would you choose for me to go or stay?â
Rapha stared at her and swallowed hard. He was spared from answering by a loud shout from outside.
Nava put a hand on his arm. âBe careful.â
Rapha turned away from her and approached the gate, locking it as he got to it.
