LATER, AT THE FUNERAL parlor, Ian made sure to stay by Annie’s side, or within earshot, in case she needed him. Some distant family and friends had mistaken him for her significant other. Their misconception was understandable, given he’d found himself unconsciously placing an arm around her on more than one occasion. He’d mentally reassured himself that it was purely for moral support.

When Annie excused herself to go to the lady’s room, Ian grabbed a cup of coffee from the lounge.

“I assume you’ll be heading back to Missouri after the funeral?” Roger Spelman said.

Ian recognized the voice before he even turned. Instead, he continued adding sugar and creamer to his drink, stirring slowly. “We’ll leave whenever Annie’s ready.”

“There’s really no need for Annie to go back with you.” Roger’s jaw tensed. “I’ve already told my sister-in-law that I’d help find Annie’s birth parents’ medical history.”

“That’s nice of you.” Ian smiled, while it seemed ironic that Annie’s uncle hadn’t been willing to help her before and had even chastised her for pursuing her biological family. “But given she doesn’t have to worry about being back to work anytime soon, we might as well continue to pursue things too. After all, I believe her mother told her a little while ago that it could be a couple weeks before you have any answers. Perhaps we can find something out sooner.”

Annie caught his attention as she approached. She looked pale. The day, and the loss of her father, were taking their toll on her. He wished he could take away her pain.

“Would you like me to pour you a cup of coffee?”

She shook her head. “No, thank you.”

Ian took another sip of his coffee.

“Your... friend, and I were talking,” Roger said. “And he’s right. You shouldn’t have to worry about a job. You can come back to the company Monday and I’ll keep you updated on whatever medical information I uncover concerning your biological parents.”

It took everything in him not to spew his coffee everywhere. Ian coughed, feeling slightly choked by his beverage and the surprise Anie’s uncle dropped. “How about she lets you know her answer next week, after she’s had time to think about it and what she wants to do?”

Seeing Annie’s relief at his response, Ian winked at her.

“What’s to think about?” Roger’s eyes narrowed.

“Given you’re buying out her father’s shares in the company...” Ian shrugged. “It might be best for her to get a new start. Plus, it’ll be painful for her to go to work every day and be reminded of her loss.”

He wanted to smirk, but refrained, covering it by taking another drink of his coffee as he put his arm around Annie. Let her uncle refute that.
