LATER, AT THE FUNERAL parlor, Ian made sure to stay by Annieâs side, or within earshot, in case she needed him. Some distant family and friends had mistaken him for her significant other. Their misconception was understandable, given heâd found himself unconsciously placing an arm around her on more than one occasion. Heâd mentally reassured himself that it was purely for moral support.
When Annie excused herself to go to the ladyâs room, Ian grabbed a cup of coffee from the lounge.
âI assume youâll be heading back to Missouri after the funeral?â Roger Spelman said.
Ian recognized the voice before he even turned. Instead, he continued adding sugar and creamer to his drink, stirring slowly. âWeâll leave whenever Annieâs ready.â
âThereâs really no need for Annie to go back with you.â Rogerâs jaw tensed. âIâve already told my sister-in-law that Iâd help find Annieâs birth parentsâ medical history.â
âThatâs nice of you.â Ian smiled, while it seemed ironic that Annieâs uncle hadnât been willing to help her before and had even chastised her for pursuing her biological family. âBut given she doesnât have to worry about being back to work anytime soon, we might as well continue to pursue things too. After all, I believe her mother told her a little while ago that it could be a couple weeks before you have any answers. Perhaps we can find something out sooner.â
Annie caught his attention as she approached. She looked pale. The day, and the loss of her father, were taking their toll on her. He wished he could take away her pain.
âWould you like me to pour you a cup of coffee?â
She shook her head. âNo, thank you.â
Ian took another sip of his coffee.
âYour... friend, and I were talking,â Roger said. âAnd heâs right. You shouldnât have to worry about a job. You can come back to the company Monday and Iâll keep you updated on whatever medical information I uncover concerning your biological parents.â
It took everything in him not to spew his coffee everywhere. Ian coughed, feeling slightly choked by his beverage and the surprise Anieâs uncle dropped. âHow about she lets you know her answer next week, after sheâs had time to think about it and what she wants to do?â
Seeing Annieâs relief at his response, Ian winked at her.
âWhatâs to think about?â Rogerâs eyes narrowed.
âGiven youâre buying out her fatherâs shares in the company...â Ian shrugged. âIt might be best for her to get a new start. Plus, itâll be painful for her to go to work every day and be reminded of her loss.â
He wanted to smirk, but refrained, covering it by taking another drink of his coffee as he put his arm around Annie. Let her uncle refute that.
