Lithuanians will often take photographs, or ask you to take one, so as to have a souvenir of an occasion. Sometimes this makes foreigners feel as if they are being mobbed by paparazzi, or filmed for a documentary. Be gracious; it is another way of including you and showing they accept you in their family or group, and it illustrates the somewhat sentimental quality that is part of the romantic streak in the Lithuanian national character.

Take a Picture

In 2004 some men were digging in the cellar of a home in Kaunas when they came upon an undetonated mine from the Second World War. They immediately realized what it was, but their first action was to go and change into suits, then return to the cellar and photograph the occasion! Only after several photographs had been taken did they call the authorities.
