There is a gap, however, between understanding a literary fictional text (1 and 2) and the interpersonal understanding claimed by the literary cognitivist. The gap exists between understanding a literary fictional work and our understanding the world. This necessitates an additional statement which will act as a placeholder until Chapter Five:

The close analysis and interpretation of a literary fictional work assists the reader’s interpersonal understanding of the world beyond the text.

I want next to emphasise the role literary devices play, over fiction, in the reader establishing (1) and (2).
